I am with you, but you're selling conventional Infantry short. Sure, leg infantry is one huge hammer and sure, there are no Scout plts that are doing CI/CA, but their battalion, bde, and division are.
I was actually greatly surprised at how effective the Aco's in MI BNs are. As far as I'm concerned, anyone in an MI BN besides the LRS, are about as far removed from being a soldier anyhow, but man! they are very effective. You've got SGT Joe tentpeg with very little DLI training who is out on the economy making really good contacts that have really panned out for us, and I believe are doing so within the realm of the law.
You know as well as I do (better than I do) that no one has ever put a packet in for selection thinking that they were going to be good-will bringers and builders of infrastructure. You wanted to be a door-kicker in some shape or fashion when you went to your Q crs, right?
Rangers have a distinct purpose and it's not to build rapport with anyone. SF have a very versatile job description; FID, SR, UW, CT, and DA, with CT and DA, especially prior to the GWOT, always there but seldom tasked.
To me, the irony is in how one of the SF's primary missions (ala Vietnam) was the UW aspect. The Army has given that special mission to the NG.

DOOR KICKER ALL THE WAY!!! I'm all about CQB. Man, if you enjoy hearing about this stuff you've got to read "Secret Commandos" PM me your address and I'll mail it to you. It's an awesome book that talks all about SF in Vietnam. Yeah 20th SFG is all into UW.

Nah, dude. I'm talking about NG leg infantry from right here in good ol' Indiana. They are the dudes who were training/advising the ANA when I left and they're still there.

Hey, I have a poster of the Indiana Rangers in my room right now. I have an extra one I can send to you if you'd like it. It's cool its got a picture and their history written at the bottom. If you want that poster and the book send it to my email or PM and I'll mail them to you.
