Tein Flex noises?? swoosh sound from front shocks

I just installed a set of (used) TEIN Flex.

Now i'm hearing some "swoosh" sound (most likely the shocks). This only happens when I go over humps or bump road and during retraction of the shock (when the car is rising up pulling then coming back down pushing the shock downwards)

What woudl be the cause of this. (Not enough shock extension)? In other words the springs might be too high up?? Thus I should lower the spring locattion and just raise the height of the base of the shock. (since Tein Flex are ajdustable on the lower areas also (where it mounts to the brackets).

Also I hear some rattling in the rear (i'm guessing maybe I didn't tighten up the rears shock tower enough).

But anyways, I'm more concern about the "swooshing" sound coming from the two front shocks..

Thanks

any ideas?

I search the forum, and so far I've only found that the Tein Flex makes a clunk noise, but this is not what I'm experiencing.

I experiencing a swooshing sound during compression of the shock

Also, rattling during street driving but none on the highway....

Unhappy

I'm totally scratching my head on the "rattling" part . I can live with the swooshing, but the rattling is a bit annoying.

I tried tightening everything down. I tightened the strut tower bolts (a good snug tight) At first I thought maybe the spring itself is rattling, but the car is resting on it. =/

that swooshing sound is normal its just the excess air that is leaving the strut as it compresses. my stock struts make the same noise (not as noticable though) and i have heard it on every set of flex that i have ridden on. as for the rattling, i would check all the bolts make sure they are all tightened down properly and that everything is seated right so there isn't excess movement available

frisco-wrx-dude,

I had a set of Tein Flex's with the same issue... if you search the i-club forums for my screen name you will see the full thread but here is what I said about the clunk I had:

For those of you with Tein Flex coilovers which clunk in the back...
My Teins clunked after I put them in.. I tried to tighten with my torque wrench the top nut to 42 ft lbs but the shaft just spun. I was told to not use an impact wrench to attempt tightening as the speed of the impact wrench spinning the shaft could burn the seals in the piston.

Here is what I found. I took the rear coilovers out and tightened in the following manor:

take one of the tein locknut wrenches and put it on the top locknut collar (just below where the pillowball mount is). Tighten with your torque wrench the top nut while holding the top locknut collar with the tein wrench.

I do not know if this can be accomplished while the coilovers are still in the car... someone else will have to try as I no longer have the tein coilovers in my car (switched to STI type C takeoffs)

**Another potential tip--go to your hardware store and find another nut to fit over the top nut. Get the top nut to 42 ft lbs and then put the second nut on top of it. snug the two nuts together (acts as a lock) so that the top nut can't loosen or back out.

good luck.

hey lndbrusr

Thanks for the tip, i'll definately give it a try..

What do you mean by you tried to tighen but the shaft spun? Are you referring to the "single" nut in the center of the shock mount and not the 3 nuts holding the pillow mount to the chassis right?

So ur saying that While holding down the Top lock nut ring with the Tein wrenches, I tighten the top "SINGLE" nut in the center of the pillow mount? Seems like it would be a two person job then...

Hmm. so the EDFC would have to come off also then....

Correct... EDFC would have to come off to expose the nut on top of the pillowball.. this nut needs to be at 42 ft lbs. If you try to tighten the nut without keeping the shaft (the nut is tightening down on the top of the pillowball/shaft) from moving then you will be spinning the shaft.

good luck,

SIghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Guess I'll have to live with it..

I tried tightening the center lug, the pillowblock lug and all and it still makes that rattling sound... =/

Grrrrr

I was about to loosen all the lug and maybe re-orient the pillowblock lug to see if it would make any difference....

sorry to hear that, but everyone that i've spoke with in the past about the tein coilovers has told me that they are bound to have noise. Any coilover will have more sound than spring/strut to my understand, maybe some emit more noise than others. At least you have some nice coilovers

I read somewhere in the site that STi group N mounts for the rear are supposed to rid the clunking / rattling sound. BTW, I don't have coilovers yet, but I was wondering how loud this clunking / rattling sound is? Thanks.

its loud enough that it can get annoying.. But u'll only hear it on the streets, on the freeway, u can't hear it at , well or the road noise masks it.
