I have this problem too, but the mechanic said (over the phone, he hasn't seen the car yet) that this is a front suspension member problem, possibly a collapsed shock, and not a CV boot or bearing problem. A CV boot or wheel bearing problem is usually a "clicking" sound when you turn (or a loud screaming sound, if the actual bearing hub has thrown its grease); a creaking sound is related to the springs.

Can you feel the creak through the steering column?

 

My WRX was doing the exact same thing, and it turned out to be very simple. There was a bit of dirt or something in the spring seat. The mechanic cleaned it and then used compressed air... it never came back. One way you can tell if this is the problem is by spraying the upper and lower seat of the spring with the garden hose. You could also squirt some oil in there once it's dry, to prevent it from coming back.

The symptom was a slight squeeking over bumps, and when turning the steering wheel. It was most noticeable when in a parking lot going slow.

im havin that exact problem...replaced the front axle...cv boots...new rotors and pads...still squealin....gettin really fed up with it....somebody toldme it might be the power steering pump...any agreements?
