Brake Rotor Replacement on a 99L

Did a search but did not find what i was looking for. I would like to know how easy is it to replace the rotors on the 99 impreza and if it would take any machine work with the wheel bearings like the shop said. I would do it my self and i have asked a friend for help but i am strapped for time if they cannot help. I got a trip this weekend and need my brakes in good condition. I have also not found a Chilton or a Haynes that includes the 99 model or i would have done it already lol. Thanks in Advance.

It isn't that bad. ILikeTofu and I did both his fronts and rears in matter of hours. Maybe 90 minutes for the front and 90 minutes for the rear. We did it on separate days because allergies were acting up for me. It's pretty easy. Just take the wheel off and there are two bolts on the backside of the caliper that attaches to hub. Take those off, pull the caliper off, and slide them rotors out.

Hmmm thanks Kev. The guy @ the shop said there was something they had to do with the wheel bearings and they had to use a press. Their alldata system said 3hours.

That's more than little scary, and their alldata config is wrong. Subaru discs are retained by the studs and the caliper only, the hub is a completely separate assembly and doesn't get touched for a brake install.

That said, if you're asking how to do it because you have a big trip coming up, i'd recommend finding another shop to do it so you don't have to worry about casuing any issues........brakes are something you don't want to be behind the learning curve on

Honestly... I don't even think it took 90 minutes each. Sybir is right. My friend, he used to do Mitsubishi stuff. We did the Subaru brakes and he was like... this s*** is hella easy. I don't remember what the torque specs for the two bolts are... but it should be a big deal. Oh... one thing... The giant *** bolt that connects the hub tot he shock, that might cause some trouble from you accessing the caliper bolt. Might have to take the lower one out.

i have a 98 L, its not bad, rotors are a breeze, just take off the calipers and the brackets and they come off with a couple hits with a hammer. as far as the bearing, you will need a hydraulic press, or at least some kind of press, i just did mine last summer, if you have that its really not all that bad. what i did was mine completely blew up so when i took off the spindle i grinded a little crack in the inner race to get it off the spindle, grind it down as thin as possible then take a flat head screw driver hit your grind spot down with the flat head and it'll crack and fall right off, then take that inner race and find either a washer just a little bit bigger or do what i did and just weld a little bead on the outside of the inner race just so it fits inside the outer race of the bearing housing and then you need the hydraulic press to press it out, pops out easily with that, then just press the new on in, press the spindle back in and you're done lol.

sounds like a lot but if you sit and look at it its not too bad. hope it works out for you man
