Brake Pads...

I have be doing some basic mods to my car. Let me preface this by saying I am not a street racer or drag racer. However, performance is important to me and I will be attending some track days and auto-x.
I have 16" wheels (not the stock ones).
Since I am not a serious racer and a newbie, I am looking for the best brake pads for track day and auto cross. And/Or any other recommendations.
A couple of items that I am interested in (remember I am a newbie in this area.)
1. Are there brake pads that are easy to replace for track days and auto-x events?
2. Is there a brake pad that will work for both street and track days?
3. How easy is it to replace brake pads? Could I do it at the track?
4. Are there any other items I should consider? With in reason and for 16" wheels (not $3k brake kits).
Thanks in advance.

1/3. yes, brake pads are easy to replace. all it requires is removing the wheel, and removing two bolts that secure the caliper (at least on the WRX) and then swapping the pads out. lots of people do this at the track, or at auto-x events.
2. there are pads that *can* work for both street and track depending on how fast you drive, and how heavy you are on the brakes. however, if you're serious about track days, use a good street pad on the street, and a good race pad on the track.
4. if you're looking for more than just pads, there are options that will work with 16" wheels and not cost $3k. Subaru 4-pot calipers may fit under your wheels (you didn't give any info on them, so i can't say for sure), as might Perrin or Wilwood calipers. you're looking at $600-1300 or so for these kits depening on options.
as far as pad options go, there are quite a few out there as long as you don't drive an '03 WRX. there was a small design change between the '02 and '03 model year that no one tooled up for. Hawk pads, Axxis pads, Porterfield pads, and some Carbotechs are quite popular.

Carbotech is the only readily available manufacturer who has been able to get their hands on the new backing plates.
Mintex also makes the 1144 in the new pad shapes but they're not the easiest thing to get your hands on in this country.
StopTech will have pads for the 2003+ WRX available in two weeks or so.
For reference, the new pad shapes are FMSI D929 front and D1004 rear.

Also Ferredo has pads for the 03 WRX 2500's i believe
And oakos.com (they are sold out at the moment) has TWR 310mm BBK for 1300.00 that fit under OEM WRX 16's and work outstanding during track days. Also TWR can make custom sized rotors for your specific application (your 16's since you don't have OEM 16's). A buddy of mine Oldmansan runs i believe 328mm rotors under his SSR 16x7.5 and a bit of room left over.
Here is a pic of my i just haven't installed yet
