sti oil change question
I have been doing a lot of searching and i cannot find the answer. I was going to buy an 05 sti soon but i wanted to do the research on oil changes now. I know you should do the first oil change after 1000 miles and then every 3k. what kind of oil is best to use and till when? when is a good time to switch to synthetic? what kind and where can i buy the non synthetic oil? is there any thing else i am missing? thanks guy for the help.

Umm...let's see as has been discussed in these forums some ppl wait till ~10k to switch to synthetic. Others switch to synthetic right away. I have been using Mobil 1 10w-30 synth in my WRX every 3k miles after reaching 10K. Other's use a variety of different oils. Some ppl change their oil every 3 months regardless of how far they have driven. Non-synthetic oil can be purchased at any auto parts store, Target, WalMart and any other place that tends to have an auto department.

It really depends on how you want to do it. There's no right or wrong way to change the oil or a right or wrong time to change it. The only things you don't want to do is run an engine with synthetic as soon as the engine is built (aka, 0 miles) since the engine can't seat itself properly if it runs synthetic from the factory (unless they run the engine on dino first). Secondly, once you switch to synthetic, you can never go back to dino oil. As for when you want to change to synthetic, it's all up to you.
I don't think there is any other proven or disproven facts about oil except the two I listed above. Just remember, once you go to synthetic, you can never go back to dino oil. The cost dino vs synthetic is 1:4. Be prepared to shell out the money for synthetic

Several car manufacturers ship cars with Mobil1 synth oil in them from the factory. I think Mercedes, Porsche, Lamborghini, Masarati, and others...so I'm pretty sure synth is fine for a new engine, despite the rumors about it causing bad break ins.
