I had just gotten a 2004 WRX on wednesday 10/20/04, they told me that break-in is at 2000 miles and im at 560 now, and not to go over 3500 rpm, i was just wondering if i do have to stay under 3500 or can i go a bit higher to break it in at some higher rpm's? my buddies say that i should go a bit higher then 3500 but i thought i should ask you guys since you probably know more than them and me. thanks!
Too many theories about what is right for certain types of engines and makes. I'd go by the book, so incase anything does break then you can say you've gone by the manual. Others like me have mashed since 1G, or after 600 in my case. A WRX engine doesn't break, I haven't heard of anyone blowing a stock unit because of the break in period. The tranny however is the weakest link, so keep that in mind. As a Suby guy, I'd mash after 600. As someone who doesn't want to be the blame for somethin' catastrophic happening to your engine, go by the book.

advise i got from Suby dealership mechanic is - by the book until 1k, semi-mash until 3k, after 3k can take to the track. Change oil 1.5, 3k. Also I mashed in a certain pattern the first 20 miles to seat piston rings, etc.
cheers
