like alex said, mostly drive belts... how long have you have those belts for? They are not hard to change. if you are doing it your self, it's not that expensive. I sold my two subarus in the past before I had to change the belts, so I don't know the price. But I just got some belts for my 98 protege and they were only about $30 for alternator and power steering belts.
if you don't have that many miles on them. often time is when the belt got wet or oil drip on it. good luck!

i am just rolling aroun 48000, i thought this was a 60k thing to do? should i worry and wait or just change them out...ooo maybe water cause its really cold and it just rained
my belt has been squeeking for the past 20k. I just got some belt spray to temperary fix the problem until now (120k). I am not saying you don't need to replace it (don't want to get blame for it you know
), but my car has been running fine for the past 20k. good luck!

Most likely thats not the timing belt.. and honestly there is no way to check if the timing belt is making noise, but you could do this. Open the hood and pour or spray water on each pulley one at a time if the sound stops or gets louder... TAAAADAAAA!!!!!!!! you found and solved your problems. Tighten or losen the belt and it'll go away....
don't use water. you can get special belt spray at autozone or kragan. Often time water would make it worst.

Yes that is the whole point to make the sound worse or to stop it for a minute. Its not supose to be a solution, its just a way to find out exactly where the noise is coming from..
