Possibly converting to Subaruanity, a few questions

Hello my future car-friends. It is quite possible that I may be purchasing a blue 2002 subaru wrx with 33k miles on it soon.

1.) It is for sale on a Subaru lot for $16,999 and it still carries a warranty...

-is that a good price? I think 15ish sounds better for a 2002...

-What is the factory warranty provided by default from Subaru?

2.) What should I look and feel for mechanically when looking over everything and test driving?

3.) Are the 2002 Subaru WRXs' high maintenance?
-I currently drive a e34 bmw 525i that I love and cant let go. However, it has sucked me dry since I first had it (which isnt always a bad thing, only when its your car). Constant maintenance raped my wallet and it made the mods I did to it pointless. I plan on selling this car soon or possibly trading it in to get a wrx or mazda 3 2.3l or sp23 (wishing on a star) or used mazda 6.

Thank you,

Joseph Michael

16999 is a little high, about 1000 to 2000 too high. I got mine for 15900 (also an 02) with 36k on the clock.

The factory warranty is 60mo/60000 miles on the powertrain, and 36/36000 bumper to bumper.

If you read the forums, you will see that most Subaru related issues relate to the less than stellar transmission that was used on the 02 and 03 (lovingly referred to as the bugeye).

When you test drive, look for notchy shifting, this may be an indicator of the syncros in the trans. wearing out. Also look for stuttery acceleration, this may be an issue with the turbo or related items.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply,

I test drove it today and I can truly say I am in love. It has a BOV on it though from the previous owner so that could be an omen. The salesman wasnt sure if it had the 30k maintenance and I forgot to ask him about the clutch shudder TSB servicing. Body and interior look to be in great shape with a tiny white chip on the passenger rear about the size of this ==> . It needs new tires too but I plan on ugrading those anyways. I think ill make an offer of $15.5, and if he feels up to the challenge of arguing, meet him at $16k.

Yay or Nay?

By what you're telling us, it sounds like a good buy if you can get it for 15.5. Just point out all flaws. good luck
