oil change

just wondering if anyone follows the manufacturer service recommendation, changing your oil every 3,750, or still at 3,000?? anyone know why its every 3,750?? or does it really matter

With Mobil 1, I try to keep on a schedule of about every 5,000. Changing your oil more often can't hurt. YOu could change the oil every day if you wanted to.

Subaru is hooked on metrics. 3750 and 7500 miles equates to roughly 6,000 and 12,000 kilometers. They took the metric spec change interval and converted it to miles and that's why 3750 miles looks odd.

I try to change the oil and filter on the first opportunity I get after rolling 3k miles. I never let it go past 4K without a change.

I've had a lot of experience doing this with all of my cars for the last 35 years. My car before the WRX Sedan was a 1990 Mitsubishi GS Turbo that turned 260K miles before I sold it. It was running fine then, too.

A good oil filter (Subaru, Purolator, Wix, NAPA) will do it's job long after the 4K. But, it needs to be replaced with every change because any motor oil (conventional or synthetic) will collect water and other acids. These acids and other damaging chemicals are byproducts from operating any internal combustion engine. Oil filters do nothing to remove liquid-state chemical contaminants from the oil. The only way to get rid of them is to change the oil and the oil filter.

I use a good brand of conventional oil (Castrol GTX) at the weights and quality specified by the owners manual that came with the car. Under "normal" driving conditions, conventional oil will not begin serious break-down before 4K. Since I'm changing every 3-4K, it's the most cost-effective way to go. Used oil is stored in milk jugs in the garage before hauling them to the recycling center. I buy oil at the parts store when it's on sale, usually several cases at a time. Sometimes, the stores will only let you by one or two cases on sale per visit or day. When that happens, I'll buy a couple of days in a row or hit multiple stores. I also stock up on the drain plug compression gaskets which I get from the Subaru parts department.

The benefits of good maintenance are a good-running, long-lived engine with fewer repair costs.
