In defense of the OEM windshield:
It also has a lot to do with where you drive and the hazards your windshield is exposed to. I think luck also plays a role, meaning, you are lucky to get hit in certain places of the windshield than others. I drive the freeways a lot and have taken countless hits with rocks from trucks (note: mudflaps are optional for large trucks in Japan) at speed and got nothing more than a scare . Some of the rocks were big enough for me to clearly see them coming.
The hit that finally did my windshield in was from a friend's car (another STi) that I was trailing behind while coming out of a hairpin turn during a track day. We were accelerating out of the corner and I heard a loud 'POP'. I watched a line in the glass rainbow it's way across with every turn I took after that. I took it easy after that and by the time I got in the pits, the break was almost 2 ft long. It was caused by a piece of 2mm dia pea gravel that made its way onto the track when somebody overran the corner and reentered. The mark at the impact point was less than 1mm in diameter and was located in the bottom right corner of the windshield, about an inch from the edge trim. When it happened, we were going about 40mph.
The aftermath: Japanese insurance does not cover glass, unless you pay out the @$$ for the premium coverage. The replacement is going to cost me close to $800 for the glass and labor, and that is going with a USED windshield. A new one would add $300 to the overall cost.
I would take a $300 replacement job anyday.
