I've drivin subaru's since I started driving. My family had a 76' 1800 sedan, 81' dl wagon, 87' dl wagon, 89' dl wagon, 91' legacy wagon, and I have now owned a wrx and an sti. Subarus last a very long time with regular maintenance we actually got 425k out of the 81 wagon before my mother gave it away and all the others passed the 200 thousand mark so the reliability of a subaru is definitely on a favorable side.

well, I think the STi is much different from previous subarus.
1) they dont build them like they used to.
2) its a relatively high pressure turbo engine
3) the way an sti is driiven is alot more aggressive than the 81 wagon that lasted 425k I am assuming... otherwise why buy a turbo car with 300hp.... not to utilize the power? i didnt think so
I think these cars will safely hit 100+K miles, but dont expect them to last forever like the older ones did...

Besides the engine there are things that wear out like brakes, tires, and pads.

Head Gaskets may have to be changed at 100K. How much do head gaskets cost to replace? yikes, I plan on using the car as a daily driver. I know if i want the best reliablity , I would choose a honda. I've never owned a turbo car so I would think that maintenance costs would be higher than a non-turbo. I've had my Civic ex for six years, drive it regularly, and havent had any problems yet besides changing the brakes and oil. I really want an STI and I have been saving my money for awhile. I'm about two months away from getting one.

There's no reason he should ever have to change his head gaskets, they aren't exactly wear components like clutches and brakes. Usually things like overheating cause them to need replacing, so that shouldn't be a concern at all. The only reasons the past EJ25s had head gasket problems is because the actual head gaskets weren't designed well and Subaru learned from that problem and corrected it.
Since USDM STis haven't been around long enough, it's too soon to know if they have any long term issues. For example, the SVX's trannies didn't start breaking until 80k miles. I'm willing to bet, however, that with the proper maintenance, an STi that isn't tracked weekly or abused in any way would make it past 100k miles without many problems.

You say "many problems", I too, am concerned with longevity, I dont mind little things, but I really dont want to be having to pony up for a whole new tranny or something, I am a very mild driver, that wants to put a little umph in his life, I really wouldnt be rompin it, just havin a little fun...

I think a wrx can be found since 92 in japan.
