leak question

I'm a newbie to subarus and recently bought a '93 impreza L. It's in pretty good condition. The only thing really wrong with it is that there may be some kind of leak involving fuel. I was told its not a big problem but something that should be fixed. I was wondering if anyone could identify it and maybe give some tips on how to fix it. After driving it has a burning type smell and it sometimes smokes but doesnt overheat. Again I'm a newb and know nothing.

How many miles? I would replace the fuel filter....just because you can and should. What kind of burning smell? I woudn't want to even drive a car that I thought might catch fire because of a fuel leak. The valve cover gaskets are notorious for giving up early but would yield an oil burning smell not a gas smell. That's a $25 fix. Hopefully it's something other than a fuel leak. With gas prices the way they are, pissing away gas...just sux...
