idle problems on 02 wrx? (code P0508)
Every morning I get a check engine light and the idle drops. Right at 2000 the idle drops down to 1500 and keeps doing this. It usually will do this for about 2 hours of driving and then stop. The next morning it happens again.
I brought it to a Subaru dealer and they got the error code, which was P0508. They have had no success fixing it yet. They keep sending me home with it but the same error happens every morning. I'm getting sick of wasting money of taxis so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
The car is completely stock, I hope someone has an idea or has had a similar experience.
-Correction on Error code to P0508

My guess is that the tumble generator valves are not working correctly... I have smelled raw fuel in the past and maybe this is related?
The intake of some Subaru models (including the Impreza WRX) includes tumble generator valves above the fuel injectors. When the engine is at idle, these valves close and bypass the incoming airflow through a passage to increase the swirl of the air/fuel mixture, resulting in an engine that operates more cleanly.

as far as the code, there is a reflash available.you will first be asked what grade of fuel you are using, you are using 93 octane right.your dealer will send your ecu calibration number to soa to make sure you have the latest reflash for this concern.as far as the person with the fuel smell ,see your dealer there is a fix for this.if that dealer has no clue what it is, there is a bulletin on this
issue.

Correction
Sorry I had the wrong code, it was actually P0508. I found a few other people that have had this problem and hope mine is the same. See following Quote:
A while back I posted the following thread regarding an idling problem and CEL I was getting: Original thread on p0508 CEL . I received a couple of suggestions on what it might be, but I continued to have a problem - when the engine was cold the idle was unstable and higher than normal, and I would get a rather alarming fuel cut-off (I think) at 5000 rpm in 1st gear. The odd thing was that it would frequently behave normally once the engine was hot.
I took it to my local dealer - the first time they couldn't diagnose what was wrong, but just erased the CEL and told me it seemed to be working okay. Much to their embarrasement, when I came to pick up the car it happened again. This time they determined that the Idle Control Valve (p/n 22650AA181) was bad, or sticky, and replaced it - which seems to have finally corrected the problem (fingers crossed).
Just thought it might be helpful to provide this update in case anyone else has the problem.

Thank god i am not the only one with this problem. I've posted a thread recently about this too: https://www.i-club.com/forums/suby-shopping-maintenance-warranty-92/what-going-wit-my-car-cel-59948/ . I just got off the phone with the dealer and he told me that they pulled code P0508 outta my car as well, now they are ordering the part to fix it. Do you guys experience the temperature gauge malfunction as well? Mines would not move at all until i restart the car.

i myself have never had a rex with a p0508 code.although the final step in the diagnoisis flow chart is to replace the iac valve, there are many resistance test to make in the harness and valve itself.im not saying the valve is not bad.but if that doesnt take care of it the harness itself needs to be inspected for correct pin fittment and resistance values.please let me know the outcome.thanx.
