At Fluid Check???? Help!!!!!!!!
I was on the road from Maine to NY state and after about five hours of driving at 75 mph or so the AT Oil Temp light began flashing. I pulled over, let it cool, and then proceeded and the light stayed off. I posted on another board and the general reply was that I should replace the AT fluid and filter.
I couldn't get a filter but I have replaced a few quarts of AT fluid ... the old fluid smelled burnt and was dirty. BUT, now I don't know whether I should check the fluid levels while the car is running in neutral OR when the car is off. Any ideas?????
Thanks! At this point, I'm stuck here and need to get home, but I'm afraid to drive it if it will damage the tranny. I have no idea if I'll be able to find a dealer on Columbus Day to fix it either so ... PLEASE ... HELP!!!
THANKS!!!!

read the owners manual for how to check the transmission fluid level.
from what i've read, you're supposed to check it while the engine is running, in neutral, on level ground. there's a high and low mark on the dipstick for hot and for cold checks. if it's a WRX, i would recommend checking it when it's cold because the dipstick is burried below the intercooler.

no owner's manual-bought it used!
thanks for the info ... unfortunately i don't have the owner's manual ... guess i'll have to buy one on e-bay ... i did find out from a different message board that you should check it while the engine's hot (it's a 2000 Forester) and run through the gears ... going to try that. anyway, appreciate your help.

the dip stick for the ATF is on the drivers side...kind of burried by the intercooler. How long had you been driving? It may just have been running low and was then unable to dicipate the heat (happened to me aty mt. hammy last year after sitting in the sun for 3 hours). You might want to look into why it was low though (rough driving conditions, skipped maint. needed, etc.).
Also, when checking, there are two sets of holes on the dipstick, one set for when the fluids cold, one for when its hot, I think it even says on the stick which is which.
