My mechanic told me to do my first oil change at 1000 miles and when I did it was pretty dirty. After that I went to 3000 miles. I used regular oil untill 10k then I switched to synthetic.
If you do a search on this board and others for "oil change" you should be able to get a nauseatingly long list of topics...
Mo Rex has it right though - the concensus seems to be to do your very first change quickly after your break-in period is over, and then to switch to synthetic sometime afterwards. There are of course differing opinions on this as to whether to use synthetic at all and when to switch if you decide to. Mobil 1 synthetic seems to be a popular choice, with I think Castrol Synthetic coming in second <shrug>. The recommended weight is 5W-30, I believe. Oh and remember to change to a new oil filter with each oil change and to replace the oil drain bolt with a new crush washer each time (or else get a Fumoto valve). People seem to vary between 3000 and 5000 miles for their changes (since apparently you can get away with changing the oil less frequently once you switch to synthetic. This again is kind of a hot topic in that there are many widely disputed arguments...
I'm pretty sure there's a sticky on one of these wrx forums that lists the preferred types and brands of fluids people like to use in their cars. Good luck with your choice

The first oil change should be at 500 miles. Then use 5w30(its on the oil cap) regular. Change the oil again at every 3000 miles. Whatever you do, do not use synthetic for your first oil change. Wait to you have at least 4000 miles before you change to synthetic. Let that motor break completely in first.
How many miles do you have? You said you need to change the oil soon, but do you have 1k or 3k miles? Personally I would wait until 10k before switching to synthetic if you're going to go that route. Some owners went to synthetic since their first oil change and have not experienced any problems. It's really your call. Just make sure you use a good quality oil and filter. OEM oil filters are good. As far as which oil to use, Mobil 1 works pretty well if you want to use synthetic. As far as dino oil, I use Mobil.
