first oil change
Well Im almost there 130 miles to go. I picked up the Subaru oil filter and drain plug seal. Im going to use Mobile 1 that seems to be the best. Who here changes their own oil? Do you use 0w 30 or 5w 30? I was wondering if it’s an easy job like on most cars or is there any problems with the oil change on the WRX. I'm going to use the OEM filter (about $10 ) because I was told if I did not it would void the warrantee. Any truth to that?
I've been good about not taking it past 4000 rpm so its going to be alot of fun when I can shift at 6k.

I don't think you need a new drain plug gasket everytime. At least I don't. You should hold out on the synthetic till you reach 7-10k, so you can let the engine properly bore through it's stroke. Keep in mind that the inside surface will be microscopically rough. Going to synthetic right away doesn't make this happen.

The oil filter is made by purolator. nothing fancy. i believe it's similar to the off the shelf purolator filter for the impreza as you can buy at your local parts store. But still, I only have used the subaru branded filter myself. It should be no more than $7 each from your dealer.
I'm trying to find the purolator pure-one filter that fits subarus, but I can't find it anywhere.

I got the filter from Timmons, that and the seal was $10. I thought the price would be that same at all dealers.
"You should hold out on the synthetic till you reach 7-10k" Dose any one agree with gc8 pimp . I'm new to using syn oil and I've never heard of this?

Dillon,
That is the consensus around here even by some Subaru shops. However, I put Mobil1 after the first 3500 miles, and I have 54000 miles right now with no problems. I'd do it after the first 2 dino changes, but that's my opinion.

DON'T PUT SYNTHETIC OIL IN YOUR WRX!!!!!!!! Well at least not untill close to 10,000 miles. The synthetic oil does not allow the rings to seat very well, and this is very important on a turboed motor. You DO have to replace the drain plug gasket every time. It is a crush washer that will only crush 1 time.

No syn oil untell 10k GOT IT. Thanks to everyone for the reply. The washer sounds like a ripoff but what would a new car owner do? . . .. . use a new one Ill tell you right now $1= peace. The owners manual shows that 5w-30 is preferred but 10-30 would work for So-Cal. what dose everyone use? brand?
Yes i am doing it myself. tranny rebild=dealer oil change=owner

I have to agree with the Fumoto oil drain valve. it's great. It makes changing you own oil even easier. i use 5w-30 because the 10w-30 is also good for cold wintery climates which we don't have around here. so i figure it has more additives which aren't necessary and makes it less good for high performance. I use castrol gtx.
