engine break-in (was: How much longer?)
Hey all
I've heard mixed opinions about this but I figure no one would know best, but i-clubbers. Anyways, i recently purchased a 2005 wrx. I have put about 200 miles on it, and have driven very softly (by softly i mean shifting around 3k rpms)
my question is when would i be able to let loose....you know, open 'er up? The dealer said 500, i've heard 1000 in the past, my buddy said 1500 or so. what have you all done? i just want the best for my baby

Break in is a hotly debated topic. You'll find people that'll say drive it off the lot like you'll drive it in the future and others that say baby it to 2000 miles.
I personally don't think break in matters, and you can start getting on it from time to time now. Just don't push it super hard for extended periods of time.

From: Are you too one of the few still living the past? Well I can change that! With a simple wicket. Yes, my friend, a wicket. PM for details.
Car Info: No car right now....sob.
Mostly you should try to avoid the same constant engine speed for long periods of time. Aside from that, a few spirited shifts won't kill your motor.

I think I remember Shiv from Vishnu saying that the cars that were driven hard and not "babied" useally put down higher numbers on the dyno.
I think that the car should be driven through the entire rpm range. It was explained to me that by allowing the engine to run hard in the upper rpm range it will force the piston to travel farther up the cylinder wall due to enertia. This is important because the piston ring is going to wear a groove in the cylinder wall ultimately creating a lip/edge where ever the ring was topping out. So lets say you babied your engine and never went above 3,000 rpm and the stroke of your piston never peaked higher than 4" (to make it easy). So later when you decide it is time to open her up the piston could potentially be traveling 4.2", but the piston ring is hitting that edge/lip that was created in the cylinder wall at 4" durring break-in, hence hindering your potential to make more power.
Hope that helps, or at least makes sense.

It is imprtant to get the engine up into the peak rpm range in order to seat the piston rings. You also need to make sure you continually vary the rpm range don't just cruise at 2,500rpm for 20 minuets straight, downshift, give it gas, just make sure you vary the speed of the engine. Other than that you just need to make sure you get your oil changed at 500mi, then at 1,000, then at 2,000 all with the standard recommended oil. Then start regular 3,000 mi oil changes with your choice of oil, I prefer mobil 1 synthetic.
Of course how hard you drive determines how often you should change your oil. If you drive like a bat out of hell often or track your car, then regular 2,500 mi oil changes may be needed.

ok so quick recap....
right now there is approximately 150 miles on the rex. Now i've stayed off the highways because i think it's best to go through the gears and hit 5th every once in a while.
like i said i've kept the shifting around 3000-3300 rpms when i go through the gears.
now i just want to make sure what that article suggested; but it basically wants me to progressively raise the rpm level to set the rings? with the occaisional rpm spurt with sufficient time to rest ("granny driving")? and change the oil at 500, 1000, and 1500 mi?
correct me if i am wrong, i just want to do this right
Thanks guys. great help so far
