usually people tend to stay away from synthetic until 10k - 15k miles.

why would synthetics have any ill effects?? i thought synthetics were much more stable and offered better lubrication property than conventional especially in extreme temps. i dont understand why it would be a problem. after i switched my 05 STi ran hella smoother and it felt like it responded better ps im also one of those guys who faithfully change oil every 3000mi . if anyone has any info plz shed some light

This thread was started regarding synthetic during engine break-in and not debating the benefits during later oil changes.

It's been suggested that the qualities that make synthetics so great in the area of friction reduction and wear resistance also prevent a fresh engine from being properly broken in. The recommendations I've read say to use conventional motor oil for break-in up to several thousand miles. This will ensure a good piston ring to cylinder seal for oil control, along with the assorted other friction surfaces like the bearings and camshafts. A new engine will not make maximum power or achieve best fuel economy until properly broken in.

some engines are coming with syn from the factory now. I would break it in with whatever it comes with then change after the first 1k if you must. I did. 33k later it's a smoove operator.

I copied this from Mobil's web site. I put the link to the page at the bottom (there's more, but I figured this portion would answer your question)

Myths
People have a lot to say about synthetic oils. Unfortunately, it’s not always accurate. But ExxonMobil is here to clear things up. Read below to get the truth behind some of the most common misconceptions about synthetic oils and your vehicle.

Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1. Reality:
You can start using Mobil 1® in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:

* Acura RDX
* Aston Martin
* Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
* Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V
* Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06
* Chevrolet SSR
* Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
* Chrysler 300C SRT-8 and Crossfire SRT-6
* Cobalt SS
* Dodge Ram SRT-10
* Dodge Charger SRT-8, Magnum, and Viper
* Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
* Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
* Mercedes SLR
* Mitsubishi EVO III
* Pontiac GTO
* All Porsche vehicles
* Saturn Red Line
* Viper SRT-10

One of the myths surrounding synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.

There's a thread on NASIOC that says Suby factory fill is already synthetic. Elf 10w-50, in fact.
