Exclamation Diagnosis Help - Engine won't start...

Hi guys,

Haven't been on here in eons now but I know there are many of you here who are extremely knowledgeable. My 2002 WRX is no longer starting and while I think I know what it is, I'm hoping for some confirmation from some other gear heads.

I've left the car sitting in the driveway for an extended amount of time, a few months due to the fact that I'm unable to drive at the moment from a motorcycle injury. Awhile ago, I jumped in to start it up and it wouldn't start. The engine would click repeatedly (alternator?) but wouldn't start up. Electrical systems and lights were dim so I suspected that maybe the battery was just nearly gone and it needed a jump. However, I didn't do that right away since I didn't have any cables and I didn't need to use the car.

A few weeks later, when I tried to start the car again, it appears that everythig is completely discharged. No lights work, remote keyless entry doesn't work, and the engine doesn't respond whatsoever. No clicking sound. A day later, I borrowed a set of jumper cables from a friend, hooked it up, and tried to fire her up. No dice. Checked my connections and tried again, no luck either. No lights, no clicking, no starting.

So...am I right in assuming that the battery is just completely discharged and requires a new one (time to go to Costco?) or are there any other possible solutions I could take? Thanks in advance, guys.

I'm certainly no expert, but with those syptoms and the relativly cheap price of car batteries (compared to bringing it to a dealer or mechanic...), I would get a new battery and move on from there if it didn't fix the problem. Good luck.

It's the battery.

That happens to new cars on the lot when they don't ever get driven.

Furthermore, the stock battery is not a maintenance free battery. If you don't keep the cells topped up, they will die.

one other possibility

it's almost definately the battery. Often times it will drain down so low that it can't even be jumped. Usually, as you suspect, the battery is shot, and has to be replaced. Occasionally, it can be hooked up overnight to a slow charger and rescued.
