It is time....a few questions
My wife has decided it is time to replace her 96 wagon with another Subaru. She has driven the 03 and 04 WRX and has decided (err..demanded) a 04 REX is what it will be.
I will try and research some of this later today as time permits but remembered how informed posters here were when i browsed this forum a year or so ago, so i thought i would ask a few questions here first.
Questions:
Are there any serious issues with the 04 any new buyers have encountered?
Does the 04 WRX have the "shutter" issue that seemed to be common with the 03 model?
What are people paying for the 04 WRX? Are they getting invoice or close to invoice?
How are insurance companies classifying the WRX wagon?
We have not seen a WRX with the premium stereo in it, how does it sound? We are prolly older than most on this board and don't need to bump down the road, but we do appreciate a decent sounding system.
Thx in advance.

None that I've heard of. The '04 is basically an '03 in different sheet metal.
Does the 04 WRX have the "shutter" issue that seemed to be common with the 03 model?
Negative. This was fixed for the '03 model and up, while '02 models have a TSB for warranty repair.

I'm not sure on this, but from what I've heard it seems to vary from dealer to dealer. Some have paid $28k, some $24k.
How are insurance companies classifying the WRX wagon?
My insurance company classifies my sedan as a 5, or high performance car. I don't see why the wagon would be different. You should check with your ins company though.

I've heard that it's not worth the money they charge. I don't have any experience with it, but this seems to be the general consensus on most boards.

Sonicsuby.........Thanks for your response.
From the few dealers I have talked to (Western Colorado and the Front Range) it looks like there is some wiggle room around the 24.5/25k mark based on an invoice of 23.5k which includes some options.
My insurance company classifies the WRX as "equipped with an intermediate performance engine," whereas the STI is "high performance."
The premium increase from what we currently pay was not as much as i thought it might be actually.

No problem. Just so you know, if you get yourself an '03, you can probably hook up a pretty sweet deal. I paid $23,200 for mine back in Feb and people are getting as good or better deals now.

Just closed the deal. 24.1k! With the options, invoice was 23.6.
I got a list of dealerships for CO, UT, ID and started calling. Asked to speak with the Sales Manager, introduced myself and said. "Let's cut to the chase, I want XX car and i am willing to go $500 over invoice on the special order. Flatiron in Boulder never got back to me, dealership in Idaho, said, done deal if a 90 day time frame was ok. Called my local dealer back, told him of the offer. He said, "We will do that, come on down." I saved $1800 from the deal I walked away from yesterday.
Needless to say, the wife is pretty stoked.

You have to wait 90 days for your car? Oh, man.
Good buy though. The WRX is such a bad *** car that I gaurantee you you'll be buying one for yourself in short order or she'll be driving the beater inside of a few months.
BTW: I'm on day 25 without my WRX and I'm going nuts. I've been on a real rollercoaster - first it was complete sadness, then I denied it happened - I'd check my garage to see if she was really there and it was all a bad dream. Then I accepted it. Now I'm back to sadness. Every time I see her in the body shop I want her back so bad - I hardly remember how good it feels to drive it.

Good luck with yours - and watch out for ******* semi drivers
