Pretty much since i got the car 02 wrx I have had this banging/knocking noise when the car is idoling. The noise is a lot worst when its cold, but has been getting a little worse as of lately. If you rev the car to 1500 rpm the knocking/banging is gone. The only mod i have is the turboxs stage 2 kit (unichip). Any one know what could be the problem, and any suggestions on how to fix it?? Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

 

The WRX engines have issues with the pistons frying. Ususally just one or two go. Normally it will throw up a CEL, is yours comming on?

 

WTF??? Where did you hear that? I'm a member of every Subaru/WRX forum out there and I have not heard of fried pistons on WRX engines. Mine haven't fried and I dont expect them to. Get a clue man, stop trying to freak people out for no reason.

Ummm...a couple people reporting problems doesnt mean WRX engines are all melting pistons! When a company like SOA sells 20+/- thousand cars there is bound to be a few manufacturing defects in the lot. That does not mean you can tell a guy his engine is done for because all WRX engines are failing. This engine has been around for several years and yes, he might have a problem but that is for his dealer to decide. Some people here might have some real input on what could possibly be wrong, but just saying something like "hey dude your engine knock means your engine is dead because all WRX engines blow up, read here" is being irresponsible.

Its not the problems that happen during manufacturing...its how the manufacturer handles the problems. As stated by the one guy, SOA is replacing his short block. I think that they are being reasonable in fixing stuff that goes wrong.

 

Of course it doesn't mean that all WRX engines are burning pistons. From what I see, Jaypride was merely bringing this matter to the attention of the person asking the question about his engine condition. Nowhere in his post does he say that a burning piston is the definite diagnosis. If you posted a question about a problem, woudln't you want a number of responses as to what "could" be causing the problem?

And with the number of people that replied to the thread about burned pistons, I'd say its a matter worth investigating. At least he could go to the dealer and inform them what he has heard from others about possible diagnoses.

I never said that was the problem, but it is in fact a possibility. There are other possibilites too, but that's the first one I thought of.

 

i don't think its the piston. It only does it at idol till 1500 rpm. Its a loud kncking noise. does any one think its the tensioner. Please give me ome ideas of what it might be
