I suppose when your not low on fuel it takes the gas from the top of the tank? Explain to me how it picks up all the gas yet it gets its all from the top. It doesn't, your always sucking from the bottom of the tank therefor always picking up whats at the bottom. The myth that runing on e picks up the junk in your tank is well just that a myth.
I am no suggesting you run on e or make it a habit to run out of gas, it does have repercussions. Fuel pump, starvation which for milliseconds could allow your car to run lean.
Yea i ran out of gas once.....car sputters and the gas petal starts to get limp. Not good, anyways have had the fuel pump replaced since (service check) and car still runs like a champ. I never really felt any concequences from running out of gas. At that point the needle was about a cm below the e line. As far as im concerned i have about that time to filler-up. Moral (not really, but you know what i mean) of the story i fill it up as soon as the light goes on, but i have the experience to know when ill run out of gas. (def. reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with kramer) I also top it off cause i know that the pumps always shut off well before the tank is completly full, in order to get my 15.9 gal. My 2 cents

Inconsistent "Low Fuel" Light
Greetings-- I have an '02 WRX manual transmission with 39k on it. Wondering if anyone else noticed the "low fuel" light takes longer to come on when you are driving the vehicle, as compared to starting the vehicle with the gas gauge at the same position? That is, while driving, it takes the gauge practically being lined up with the line on "E" before the low fuel light comes on. However, if I start the car even with the gauge slightly above the E line, the low fuel light comes on & stays on.
Additionally, twice I've had the low fuel light come on with the gauge WELL above E, approximately half way between E & the 1/4 tank line.
Also, I've seen some folks mention topping off their tanks. I've tried it twice & really have only been able to put in about 0.4 additional gallons after the pump auto shut off... are other people seeing about the same? I can get a whopping 2.4 more gallons after pump auto shutoff into a '99 Chevy Lumina I drive for work!

Thought I'd mention that you should be careful of sharp turns when you've been running on 'E'.
I carefully calculated my mileage and knew I'd make it to the gas station 1/4 mile down the road, however I had to make a hard left across a Route to get to it and during the turn the engine sputtered. Not a good thing.
I had enough gas - as long as I didn't make turns!

anyways.. I'm sure there is probably a better explanation for it. but my mom is bad about letting her gas run out. she inherited an older car that had been babied its entire life (fresh oil, never let the gas run low, etc). first thing she did was run it down to the fumes.. and it wouldn't start! it was the fuel pump.. we replaced it and told her to quit letting it get low in the tank and its running great to this day.
