yeah i guess its possible to starve the pump on a hard turn, but i've never heard of the fuel pump life issue.

I didnt read all the replys to this thread, but this reminds me of the seinfeld episode, where Kramer takes the SAAB that Jerry is thinking of buying on a test drive with the salesman and wants to see how far the car will go before it runs outta gas..... LMAO.....thats a great episode....

Fuel pumps cavitate when they are starved of fuel. So if you run your vehicle out of gas, your probably going to have to replace your fuel pump sooner than you normally would. Doesn't mean right away but it will reduce the life of the pump. The fuel going thru it is part of its internal lubrication system. This is true for all fuel pumps. Well most that I have ever seen at least.

 

hrm, there were many times where i wanted to see how many mpg i was getting on a tank, and usually the light came on when i had about 2-3 gallons left, still went pretty far...but then usually when the light comes on, i get kinda paranoid and granny shift

 

i ran out of gas one time, the car didn't seem to like it very much, but it ran fine after it. i need to replace the fuel filter soon here anyways. it goes for a while with the light on, i think i made it like 70 miles or so with the light on. give or take.


honestly though, don't trust the needle and its position. watch your mileage and keep track of how much further you can go. the needles can be decieving

 

does anyone's tank stop filling before it reaches the top line? when i fill up on the empty line i only get 10 gallons and it does go all the way up to the top line. wierd

 

I pretty much fill up when the light comes on, and for me that 14 gallons.

Yes I am a nerd and have a log . I try to fill it up before the light goes on though, keep the fuel pump happy.

I usually fill up around the quarter tank mark. I wouldn't let my car run out of gas, its not worth the hassle if you do.

i hardly do, and try not to as much as possible...don't want to stall the car and get stuck in the middle of the road...i usually fill up when i get down to a quarter tank of gas

 

Ran out meaning your car stopped or did you make it to a gas station

 

i run it out so far into the E you think it woudn't start :P

i've gone about 75 miles into the empty light turning on
