How do I disable the alarm chirp?

I just purchased a 1997 Legacy GT Limited and I hate the chirp that the alarm "speaker" makes when I lock/arm and unlock/disarm the system with the remote. It is a Subaru/manufacturer's alarm... Does anyone know how to disable the chirp so that just the lights flash, or if it is even possible? I have looked at the main system box and didn't see any kind of switch. And I have tried many little variations of holding down the remote buttons but nothing seems to work.
Am I doomed to put up with it?
Please help.

Not sure if this will work for the 97 Legacy, but it worked for my 2000 GT Wagon and my 2002 WRX. Press and hold both buttons on your remote for about 5 seconds. I believe the car will make one churp. Now try setting or disabling the alarm you should not hear anything. You can do the same to turn this function back on.
In the past I've turned it off, only to turn it back on. I usually walk away and lock the doors, without the churp I don't know for sure if the door locked. Kind of a catch 22.
Hope this helps you. If it doesn't check you owners manual. I think thats where I got this info from.
