Getting First Subaru

I drive an 04 TS wagon (same thing as the RS wagon now). I get about 29-30 with pure highway driving. Considering its AWD that's not bad.
Some of my opinions about the car after owning it for a year.
1 - Its a cool car but Its not luxury by any means. You have to like the way a subaru drives to appreciate it. The boxer engine has a unique sound which sounds very mean in as the RPMs go up.
2 - TIRES!!!! The stock Potenza RE92 are total cr@p on anything but dry road. Replace them with a decent all-season and it'll be great in the rain, mud and snow.
3 - AWD doesn't mean its perfect in snow. Actually if you get the manual on the RS then you have 50 front and 50 rear. Get on it too much and it becomes a rearwheel drive car almost. Smooth driving is the way to go.
4 - Don't launch a subaru, the AWD grips too much and the tranny takes the punishment, unlike a FWD or RWD car where the tires spin on a launch. If you must race, then slip the clutch. Clutch pads are cheaper than transmissions. I cooked a tranny on an 01 Outback Sport a while ago.
5 - Stereo. Nothing great, nothing bad. But the shallow mounting depths mean you have to watch your speaker selection if you upgrade.
6 - Nothing is more fun than watching the trucks and SUVs swerve like crazy when starting in the snow as you just walk by

7 - Although the wagon might not be as cool to you, the benefit of being able to haul stuff is nice.
Just some thoughts to throw at you.

sounds like you guys actually scared gsx out of buying an sti, or maybe they found out what insurance costs on an sti, I know here in cali insurance costs are astronomical even on my wrx, i'm sure insurance is a little cheaper in the south but not that much cheaper!
The insurance was one factor and the other was the bad service we got a southern states. We sold my sisters car because the insurance was cheaper and we got 12,300 for the car. now we have to buy her a car so we are looking to get her a new Eclipse

u can find a nice 02 wrx for around $13k mabye a little less or more and then spend like $4k on upgrades and it will be better then a stock sti
