Let me tell you of a great horror story that I went through.
I was in one of the big island-wise cruises that HIIC was part of. One of the bigger websites had coverage of the car and the first pic of the gallery there had my car first. The license plates weren't blurred out. A week later, my sidemarkers were stolen from my car, as well as being keyed, and somebody tried to break all my emblems. The next day while stepping out to the car, I noticed something, someone was able overnight to spraypaint my whole entire car with spraypaint and also in doing so, thought they were cute and drew a phalic symbol pointing into my hoodscoop. Now, I'm not speculating that it caused it but hey, I know all my neighbors, and I live in a community where most of the people here is over 40 years old. Whats the chances of that? Its possible that some punks around the community decide to mess around with my car but it was JUST my car that was vandalized. My neighbors have a Z06 Vette and another has a RSX-S. Why would you pick on the least expensive car of the 3? Mind you, I don't drive like a punk. I drive very politely and wave thanks to people who allow me to cut lanes. Nor I have any enemies that I know of since all I do is go on I-Club, chat, sleep, and work. I'm the type that doesn't want to trouble anyone. Its a possibility that my plate showing was the culprit of this.
It is possible someone can get your license plate number and go to the DMV and obtain your information. It has been done before. Its better safe than sorry. Sure you pass by many cars everyday with your license plate showing but 99% of them aren't car enthusiasts. But say having your picture of your car here with plate showing exposes you to 100% car enthusiasts.

My response, YOur phone number is probably listed in the phone book for public info, but you dont post that on here either.
Besides for psychos and such, People can talk alot of smack on the internet and expect no-one to find them. Posting that plate number would make it easier for someone to find you.
And as mentioned before... I show my car with $20,000 in upgrades under the hood or in the trunk that I normally wouldnt show anyone. Then they track you down and jack you.

Posting one's lic. plate number is analagous to posting your whole name, phone number, address, and in some states Social Security number.
Your plate is publicly accessible as many folks posted but keep in mind there are 'wrong' people out there who have either connections via unprofessional contacts who can research you in moments (see 'Hash25rs') while others might use skip tracing software/services to research you.
I personally never post my complete name, specific location (city), the company I currently work for, or any other identifying information in any forums I visit (car related or otherwise). I have a family and there are a lot of off-center and/or flat sick people in the world (and on the net) that I might be forced to hurt if they show up at my door.
Eight years ago I had this happen as a result of a customer (male) who was having problems at home and thought I was a nice guy and wanted to hang out. So he decides to look me up via the net against my full name and shows up at my residence on a Saturday morning unannouned or expected asking about if I'd be interested in going for a drink with him (!).
To put it lightly, I was stunned to see this guy at my door and just a bit concerned. I humored him with a beer at my stoop, in full view of my neighbors in the event he might flip out, and eventually he went away after telling me about how his wife left him a month prior and his kids wouldn't speak to him or return his calls. Up to now I'd only talked to this man about work stuff and had never gotten 'personal' with him on any subject. Regardless he picked me as someone to talk to. The guy lived in a _different_ state and said he'd driven over 120 miles to my neighborhood. Then he starts commenting on how its a nic place and asking me about how much do homes cost here and so forth.
Being the quick thinker she is, Mrs. Janq (then just my GF) called a neighbor of ours who came over after about an hour and made like he was coming to pick me up for some bogus event we had pre-planned. This gave me an out to get rid of the guy and he took the hint to leave after about an hour.
I called his boss first thing the following Monday and told him what happened and that I was pissed about his visit. As it turns out the guy was "downsized" from his job that previous Friday as a result of various 'Disciplinary Issues'. I never heard from that guy again.
You never know why a person might for seemingly no reason cross the line and decide to 'look you up' IRL. The bottom line is why not play it safe, which is easy enough to do, than be sorry.
The world is chock full of crazy people and folks who act before thinking.
Be safe as weird & sometimes bad stuff happens.
