Blinking CEL and clicking

I did a quick search for this, but it's entirely possible I missed something.

Anyways, I've left my car at home in the hands of my dad and he's come across a blinking CEL and some clicking around various parts of the car and both fans going from 0 on -> 1 on -> 2 on -> 1 on -> 0 on and back.... I came home and confirmed this and was wondering if any of you've come across this. I don't have time to take it to the dealer yet, since I've got finals coming up.

It turns out that the clicking is a few different things... in the front is the air conditioner (the piece to the right of the alternator when you've got the hood up and you're standing in the front of the car) unit, the fans obviously make noise, the relays for the fans are clicking... but there's more clicking.

We pulled the relays for the fans and AC and found that this little valve looking piece on the fuel line (behind the air runner for cylinder 3) was also making a slight hissing sound.

And at the rear of the car, this box object is clicking and whirring... sounds like another solenoid or something moving.

Any ideas? I'm getting my OBD-II scanner this week so hopefully I'll be able to pull a code, but I just wanted to ask a preliminary question.

Thanks

-Jason

When does the CEL blink? Is it only when the engine is running, or does it also blink when the key is in the run position with the engine off?
Did your dad or anyone else mess around with the car at all? There are two green connectors under the dash which are normally not connected to anything, if they are plugged together a diagnostic mode is activated which creates the conditions you are seeing- the CEL flashes continuously and various solenoids and relays on the car will cycle and the fans will run. It's not uncommon for someone to be under there for some reason with the underdash panel removed, see those connectors hanging and assume they should be connected, and plug them into each other with the above described result. Check your car and see if this is what happened.

Hey Jason,

long time no talk dude.

Maybe you can show it to Gino. Or come down to UCKK tuesday night, and see if anyone where can help you figure it out.

Hey Gagan!

Yea I'm not around that much anymore... my scooby sits at home without me (I miss her quite often) and I'm stuck w/ a POS 87 camry 4cyl. I probably won't make it to UCKK anytime before summer... But I could head over to Gino's after finals are over. Then again, by that time I should have my OBD Scanner.

Mulder, Thanks for the tip, I'm going to run outside right now and check to make sure that wasn't the problem.

Mulder, you're a genius.

I knew that the green plugs were for a diag mode, but I never plugged them together because I knew what they were for, but my dad was having problems with my car's alarm, and when he was trying to work the kill switch, he noticed that he broke it off earlier accidentally by kicking it, and he put the green connectors together not knowing what they were.

AHHH I feel better now.

Now I've just got the stupid CEL for my slow O2 sensor.
I like that one... I'll change that O2 sensor this summer

Thanks.
