Congrats on your purchase! EVO or Sti, they are both cool cars to have. Nice full blue color on yours Daveyd.

I hope that if or when I get my car that everything works out well. Pricing and all.

Sorry, thats my personal experiences with that engine, so I definitely the STi because the engine is alot more reliable!
Not flaiming, just curious. How built was your friend's 4g63? What kind of mods? What was the failure? Was it just burning oil or was it a full on granade job? I'm just trying to get an idea of the level of build. I'm not familiar with the 4g63. Is this typical for that block or just something out of the ordinary?

I'm wondering if some of the WRX will start to see the same sort of problems when they hit those kind of miles. I have heard good things from people on this and the other boards about the WRX engines holding up in miles even when built. But I have also seen blown built engines posted here and elsewhere. IMO, when you add horses you subtract miles. I have no pland on modding my STi (although that may change when the warrenty runs out), so hopefully the STi's new block will not suffer from any infant deaths and last for 100+k in stock form.

A good friends/customer bone stock Evo 8, with about 25 miles on it, dynoed at 233 hp, 253 torque just last weekend.

As for your buddies and their unreilable 4G63's, it is all down to parts selection and tuning. the 4G63 is perhaps the best 4 cylinder motor ever...literally. I have had several, and when properly modded and properly tuned/maintained, all made excellent HP numbers, and did so without issue.

My last Mitsu experiment, my GVR4, was the best of all. Qucik story. I bought the car around 4 years ago and it was from the original owner, needing a new motor (stock motor had let go at 182k..car was 100% original). I bought what I was told was a brand new, crated 4G63T motor from a reputable used parts dealer in Cali. Allegedly, it was the last of the Mitsu. built 4G63T motors, and we got it for a good price (2200 shipped, for a new, not rebuilt crated long block). We dropped it in the car with some mods at the beginning (boost controller, big 16G turbo, cat back, JUn flywheel, ACT clutch, suspension, etc.). From there, I steadily modded it over the years, to its present state of 660 injectors, 18G, front mount, VPC, S-AFC, fuel pump, fuel lines, the works. Car runs consistent low-mid 12's at 112-115. Finally last May, the car began showing signs of a worn ring. A compression test revealed that in fact, the #1 cylinder ring (runs the leanest) had called it quits, and compression was aroun 85 psi...not good. So, we tore the motor out, and while I ahve been building a race motor for it, we dropped in a freshly rebuilt 1G motor. What we found on the old motor was that it was NOT a 4G63T motor afterall...just a plain old regular 4G63 (non turbo) motor, from an Eclipse GS (non turbo). Thats right, I ran mid 12's, droe the car for around 52k miles, on a non turbo 4G63 motor, and when iut finally was pulled out, it was for a cracked ring..no broken piston, no broken rod, etc. Car ran the day it was taken out (just smoked at idle!). Having worked on countless DSM's and G-VR4;s, I ahve no doubt that this is among the best 4 cylinder motors ever built, and certainly the best (in my book) 4 cylinder turbo motor ever built. While the DSM's do suffer from build quality issues (especially the 2G cars, which I admit are not the best one on the block), the G-VR4 is literally a tank, and hands down one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Took far less money, and far less tinkering to get it to run what my old Subaru ran. Just my $0.02
