Months ago I went to the Subaru dealer and started asking about the STi. First of all they knew nothing about it, I actually seemed to know more than anybody at the dealership. The same thing happened with the EVO, the dealers are the worts places to go for info on new cars......
Anyway, I finally spoke with a salesman at the Subaru dealer. They came up with some kind of stupid idea of asking for a non-refundable deposit of $500 and the only thing they said about the price was "it will be around $35K and we'll mark them up at least 10% over sticker"
Needless to say, I poilitely declined their generous offer and decided to keep driving my WRX. I looked at other carsw too. I thought maybe a new 350ZX would be nice or a G35 coupe, but they are all priced too high. Also, the when AWD system gets in your veins, it's hard to give it up
Well, last friday I found out the new EVO had arrived at the local mitsu dealer. I went to see it and flipped for it! What a nice car! They would not sell me the car because they did not have all the paperwork. They would not even take a deposit! The manager said "I can't do it and be fair, everybody wants this car. When it's ready to sell, the first person that shows up will get it". I was ver upset because I was going out of town for the weekend and would not return until today (wednesday). I thought the car would be gone by the time I got back
Well, surprise, surprise, the car was still there this morning. Not only that, but the pricxe was *below* MSRP!! What can I say? they gave me a fairly acceptable trade on my yellow rex (it was sad to say goodbye), I managed to scrape up the balance and..... well, what can i say, it's an awesome car. fast as hell, great brakes, handles like a modified sports car and look great! Sorry Subaru, I really wanted the STi but all the jerking around by the dealer, the high price and the timing did it for me. I still can't wait to see the new STi, but I'm very happy with the EVO!!

I really wish I have this choice between the two. There is no STI nor EVO in Canada and my drool over either car is getting more and more...glad that you have your EVO. Other than the console a bit plain, the outside are exceptional. Have fun with your car.
Congrats on your new ride. In today's instant gratification sociaty, it is always very tempting when one is currently available and the other is a wait. I too might be tempted if the local dealer didn't want a 10K markup. Even if it was priced at MSRP, I will at least wait for the STi to come out. Enjoy your ride and pop in and let us know how you're liking it after a few thousand miles.

Congrats
an EVO for under MSRP is a great buy, I would do it too. However, I do think that the same thing will happen with the STI, it just takes time for the dealers to realize they cant sell anything with those kind of markups and figure out they need to move the car and sell it at a real price.

Looking at the 3 cars (WRX, EVO, STi) in stock form, each is probably a great car for the money, that is assuming you would never consider modifying the car. In stock form, I prefer the STi, then the Evo, then the WRX. If I were willing to mod all of these cars, the STi would be my first choice, then WRX, my second, and EVO third. Why? Because the EVO is 2L, 5sp, no special center diff. Basically it's a modified WRX, but surely handles better. $5k will easily make a WRX do everthing better than a stock EVO. With the EVO pushing 19psi with a twin scroll, it appears to me that gaining power in the EVO will be relatively expensive. I'm guessing the EVO is probably only $2k (purely a wishful guess)less than the STi, and $2k in mods on and EVO won't make for a car I'd rather have over a stok STi. One good thing traditionally for the Evo is its torque. That gets a thumbs up. Personally, I can't wait to at least get a ride in one.

mmm ... have to disagree ... the Evo is a world of difference from the standard WRX ... maybe the power can be made up easily ... but not the steering rack, suspension geometry (it ain't just better struts), better engine for tuning, FMIC, etc... etc....
The Evo and STi are supercars ... the WRX is a "sports sedan" ... different league... wholly different purposes ...
It's kind of like the Integra Type-R vs GS-R ... a lot of people thought "25 hp ... big whoop" ... but when you start adding up all of the differences ... you end up with a wholly different car.. not simply a GSR + $3k in mods
I should add that I have a deposit on an STi ... strongly considered an Evo ... but never considered a base WRX

Just curious if the handeling is a good as advertised. I saw a report in Car and Driver, and they said it pulled something like.97 G on the skid pad. A closer look at the pictures showed that the tires of the test car were very well worn, possibly giving more grip. Just wanted to get your thoughts.
As far as modifing the car, I have heard that there are as many as 35 hp in the ECU, just waiting to come out. remmeber that the EVO pumps out 320 hp in Japan, and everyone knows that it is from the 2.0 L. I have even seen downpipes for the EVO already marketed in the magazines I subscribe to. PLEASE keep us up on all of your experienced with the EVO, I think that there are a lot of us in the same position as you were, thinking of the STI as well as the EVO. CONGRATS with your new car, I think all of us are a little jelous. I am trying to get a test drive as soon as I can, but no one wants to give me one

the handling is way better than advertised. i took a ride in vishnu's last friday, and was blown away. of the sti is too expensive, than i will for sure be getting an EVO.
the EVO is leagues ahead of the current wrx. i hear that changes top the '04 geometry on the wrx and sti makes a huge difference. but we can only wait at this point. and at this point the EVo is MUCH better in the handling department.

i agree the base wrx is no match for an evo...and thats 19psi is very misleading...the 4G63 is EASILY upgraded and you'll see 300hp+ Evo's very soon for very cheap.
SCC put .95 on an EVO with 400 miles on it...they ran 13.5's consistantly and broke 60-0 in 110 ft. Slalom was aroun 73.1mph, 0-60 in 4.9-5.0.
Rumors are this wasnt a production model and may be a bit faster, but shows the ease of change
