Unless you're already on the Evo waiting list, you might struggle to get one at MSRP in the short-term......this too is low-production and I think they're only bringing in around 4,500 units for '03. Looks like many of the Mitsu dealers are far less scrupulous than the Subaru ones..............mark-ups on the Evo look commonplace and are ranging anywhere from $1k to $5k, and upwards.......check out Evolutionm.net for all the latest info.
Also, looks like many people may have been a little optimistic or misinformed about standard equipment versus price. The large carbon fibre wing is standard, but this standard package costs around $29.5k..........add destination charge and you're up to $30k MSRP without taxes (and not including dealer mark-ups).
Looking at the STi spec. relative to the Evo VIII (and Evo sales-people are saying that Mitsu are basically making zero profit out of the car at MSRP) it's looking more and more likely that the STi (with all the standard mechanical/drivetrain features plus goodies like the large wing and BBS forged rims) will come in around the $32k mark.......that's if you can get it at MSRP.

Manufacturers cannot tell their dealers what price to sell cars at. Dealerships are independently owned franchises and if a Manufacturer tries to dictate sale prices it can constitute price fixing.
I spent 5 years as a factory rep for Ford Motor Co. and had to be very careful when it came to doing advertising/promotions with dealers because of certain laws. Dealers can charge as much or as little as they want. We could always give our opinion of course but not demand. For example when I was a rep a dealer called me and asked if I minded him putting an "addendum" on a particular hot product. I told him that I wouldn't do it and I would just charge MSRP but that if he really wanted to he could do whatever he wanted.
In large Metro markets where dealers often compete against each other, customers often keep going back and forth between dealers pitting them against each other forcing prices down. Because of this sometimes "agreements" are made between dealers to sell at or around a certain price to keep from "whoring them out" as they like to say.
But as the manufacturer we never wanted to be part of any of those conversations

tell that dealer to take that 5 k and shove it up his ***.
never pay over MSRP!
screw those Evo dealers too.
i was quoted. 7 K and 10 K over MSRP which is @ 28,987 official
dunno wtf ford is doing but. for Mercedez. it's a strict no no for charging over MSRP.
MB USA will come down on to the dealers and wip their asses back to MSRP
Bimmer charges over MSRP like a ****!.. pisses me off. thats why i ll never buy a bimmer.
Nissan 350Z .. charging 1-2 K over MSRP .. but it's against Nissan of USA.. dealers artificially mix in optional stuff to hit you up w/ the extra. like over charging a Lo Jack, or stuff like that.
at least you getting something for the premium.
sorry guys.. got carried away a lil..
really hate them blood sucking dealers who dont' know anything but premiums..
got this Nissan dealer told me that Z has a I 6 w/ twin turbo.. lmao!!!

You will see variations from manufacturer to manufacturer and also from dealer to dealer. Depending on how a particular manufacturer words their franchise agreement can dictate how hard they can "counsel" dealers.
Just from your different experiences you can see how much it can vary.
Of course at times all the rules are thrown out the window and anything can happen. You can only police so much.
I would never pay over sticker myself. But many people do so I guess dealers will take it if people offer it. Supply and Demand!
