Any Concerns about This "New" Engine??
Just wondering if any of you are a bit worried about buying an Sti WRX since it has this "Brand New, Only Available in America (maybe Australia, etc.)" 2.5l engine? The 2.0l has been around (the world) and proved its worth. But this 2.5 is a brand new baby. Seems like we've been made the Guinea pigs for this one, eh?
Just lookin' for all yer input on this. Thanks.

good question
that's a good question. i was kind of surprised to hear about the 2.5 instead of the 2.0 myself. i thought that the wrc cars have all been 2.0, and i thought that there was something about making a production version of the engine for some type of wrc rules? does the new 2.5l mean that the wrc rules have changed? what does the wrc wrx currently use?

Re: good question
WRC rules state no engine larger than 2.0. You will not be able to enter with the 2.5. (like any of us would...) The 2.5 is a modified RS engine, so it does have years of use. The modifications only make it better. I am sure the first year there will be some bugs to get out, but I am not that concerned. I would not make alterations the first year, just incase you need to fall back on the warrantee.

no tuning for the first year for sure..
not too worried bout the new engine..
SCC said it's upgraded 2.5 RS already..
i though it was gonna be a up bore and stroked EJ 208
anyway.
if it's good for debut... it's good for me
plus there are a bunch of them out there testing

Yes, likely the increase in displacement was to offset the decrease in boost (caused by crappy gas). There may have also have been some political agenda concerning US emission laws, so the 2.5 may have been more viable.
As far as I have been able to determine, this 2.5L is very similar to that which Sube is already using, save the semi-closed deck and variable valve timing. I wouldn't criticize SCC too much: when it comes to technical things, they are usually on the mark. Besides, why would Subaru risk all the reliabilty issues with a "ground up" design? It is clear that they want this car to out perform the EVO, and you can't very well do that if the car is always in the shop, can ya?

Its not a "ground-up" design as everyone keeps saying. There are AVCS EJ25's in Japan, and the basic designs are pretty much the same as the rest of the EJ series minus the semi-closed block and electronic throttle. I would go out on a limb and say that the twin-scroll JDM STI is probably a more complicated design.

I think the new 2.5 will be a great engine. I always think of it as better than the Mitsubishi Evo./Eclipse/Talon/Galant engine!!
Thats one of the only reasons why I won't get an Evo, the motor blows, and Mitsubishi will not warranty modified cars, or even stock cars that show track abuse!!!

As someone who never modifies his car and plans to extend the warranty when the time comes, my only concern for the engine relate to performance and drivability. Of course, I will be alarmed if my stock engine throws a rod in the middle of a lap, but I doubt that will happen if the car is maintained properly.

This is what im worried about with the STi having a diff engine than the rest of the world. "New" is not always better. EVO8 have improved engine(sorta), and same engine as the rest of the world which equates to more parts available.
Is the 6mt more reliably than the 5mt?
This coming from a former owner of a "ground up" design engine/car (7th gen celica).
