WRX Engine Lashing Concerns...
I just posted this on the Maintenance and Warranty Forum..But I wanted to get a Bay Area take on what's wrong with my car before I take it into Livermore Subaru this week.
I have a 2002 WRX and when I take my car up to 3500 to 4000 rpm, the engine sounds like the it is lashing - and not in a good way. I just took a drive in it to better describe the sound and it sounds like when the revs get high, it's scratching or grinding against metal. Before 3500 rpm, everything sounds fine. This never used to happen in the past but now it has. It has 26,000+ miles on it.
If anyone has any kind of diagnosis, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

pop the hood and rev the engine to see if it moves. My old car broke and engine mount and the whole thing was twisting when I reved the engine (usually in gear though) parts of it would touch the hood or bay and make bad noises. Just a thought.
Is it only at wide open throttle, or does it happen all the time no matter what? Does it just suddenly kick in, or does it gradually get louder? What modifications have you done to the car, if any?

Kellie, to answer your question. The car is stock. I don't have the time or money to mod my car. The noise usually happens at 4000 rpm as I have been testing lately. It is disturbing to hear an engine thrash like this.

good service
I would recommend taking your car to either Santa Cruz Subaru or Carlson Subaru of Redwood City. The mechanics at both places actually seem to know what they are doing.
I don't have personal experiance of Livermore, but I do for Diablo Mazda/Subaru and don't take it there! I've also had problems in El Cerrito.
Good Luck.
