02blackwrx- yah, those things are hard to find.
i might just fabricate one from a pocket i took off my honda
prelude. i have a vtec controller under the stereo on that car so took the pocket out. hahaha.
will check out those
universal ones too, if it looks like too much work.

yah, im going to take off the mounting clips off the trim that
goes around the center dash
and try out different pockets and mounting angles to decide
how to go about it. i did this on my other car and turned out
pretty good at the end.
just takes a lot of time... wonder
if it would look good with the pocket on the top instead of
below the HU....hummmmm....

just for the heck of it, i tried putting in the
pocket into the wrx which i took off my honda.
to my surprise, the pocket fit perfectly!!
you dont even need any mounting clips or
anything. just some weathering gasket
(5-6mm thick) on
the pocket's sides to mesh with the wrx stereo
bracket and another gasket between the
new HU and pocket. the wrx trim plate will
press up on the pocket making a solid friction fit.
the pocket will not move and since it's
weathering gasket, not too worried about it
rattling later.
the best part is that since you can just pull
out the pocket next time when you're ready
to upgrade your amps or sub, you dont even
need to take out the new HU!
the only time consuming part about the install
was since it was the first time for me to route
12v continuous through the firewall, finding the
right grommet to go through was kind of a
challenge. i used the hole behind the clutch...
perfect access to the battery.
im going to finish up tonight and will take a
few picts.

yeh, pretty much all speakers that are anywhere close to the
size of the factor speakers will require a spacer. but i dont
think subaru sells the adapters by themselves (comes with
premium speaker kit).
you should contact east coast scooby. he makes custom ones
out of MDF.
btw, the alpine is wiredup and turned out very well...
based on my observations, you must change head unit too
along with at least the front speakers to make the system
sound decent. hahaha.
