Stock head unit push aftermarket speakers?

I was thinking about putting in some Infinity Reference or Polk db650 instead of the stock speakers in my 04 WRX. I want to keep the stock HU since it already has 6CD in it. I like to jam to my music, but I don't plan on blasting it. I'd rather go w/o an amp if possible.

Question is - will it be able to push the new Reference speakers? (component in the front; 2 way in the back)

2 follow-up questions:
If it can push them sufficiently, which are better?

If not, how big of an amp should I go with?

you will prob. need some componet speakers, has a little amp that connect to them. the factory unit will prob. not push them that well. If you got the money, MB quartz are nice

The factory unit is not going to sound very good with aftermarket speakers, you are better off putting in an amp to run them.

There are a bunch of other threads that indicate the stock stereo is garbage in general. I have read several posts of people who replaced the stock stereo, and that made the biggest difference.

When you replace the stock head unit with an aftermarket deck, your factory speakers will sound a lot better right off the bat.

I agree that the stock unit may not be the greatest quality but it does have a 6 CD indash and it's stealth looking! Also, after installing stereos for over 5 years professionally and having everything from hi-end HU's to DVD/TV/recievers in the dash, I can honestly say that aftermarket HU's are a waste of money. They don't last nearly as long as stockers. Reason being is that aftermarket companies need to keep making money on their new stuff that comes out each year. So if you don't got the hook up or money to waste, add a 4 channel amp to the factory deck via hi-low convertors. A true 50wattX4 outta do the trick.
