I am trying to do a hard wire install rather than the cigarrette lighter. What I am wondering is if the power cables in the ceiling panel for the autodimming compass mirror will work, or is it not a 12 V "switched" wire? Any info would be helpful.

Yes those wires will work, many people have connected it there.
You can also do it at the fuse box and run the power cable up the pillar and over to the mirror to plug into the V1. I did mine that way so I could wire in the accessories (remote display and audio unit).

you can use the factory wiring that was intended for use with the auto-dimming mirror/compass as long as that isn't installed in your car. its a 12v switched power supply, thats how i wired my V1. if you take off the map light bezel, you can hide the power unit in the headliner, and just run the power cord out from under the bezel. you don't have to dremel the bezel to get the cable out since its a flat phone cable, but you can if you want to.
