Stock Speaker Upgrade Advice

I drive a '92 legacy, but since legacies and imprezas both use 6 1/2"ers for their front doors I fiigured here would be a good place to ask.
I have a pioneer head unit which puts out 22W RMS and 50W peak power. I needed some 6 1/2" speaker upgrades as my stock 12 year old speakers are starting to feel their age. I picked up some baseline pioneers for $50 a pair from Crutchfield. They seemed solid. Polypropylene woofer, foam surrounds. I spent 2 hours today replacing all 4 of my speakers with em. They suck. They are worse then my stocks from 1992. Oh sure, highs and mids are clean and clear, but I have NO bass. It sounds like someone is hitting a bongo when the beat hits. So I'm looking for some 6 1/2"s with a deep responating bass. I'm willing to spend up to $100 a pair max. Any help?

That's a tall order.
It's going to be hard for the headunit to put out the power needed for "deep responating bass". Most 6.5s won't get below 60Hz and certainly won't with 22 watts without horrible distortion.
I'm assuming you'd be looking to replace both sets at $100 each correct? So you have a budget of $200? What about this?...
Keep the one set for your front stage, you say the highs and mids are clean and clear enough for you. Sell the other set to a friend, or relative for $30. Hey, you only used them once. Now you got $230 to work with. Take it, run to Car Domain (http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/INFBASSLINK) and pick up a Basslink (you'll need another $60...isn't car audio fun? ;-)
This would give you your bass, and the amp is built in! That 10" woofer will do a lot more for your system than any 6.5 set in the rears will do.
Best of luck in your search for audio bliss.
