Speaker Upgrade

Anyone upgrade their front/rear speakers yet? What size/brand/type did you get? Spacer?

What about 6x9's?

6 x 9

= NO. Unless you want to cut the ch!t out your doors. I had to cut the rears to get a 6.5/5 1/4 (depending on who you believe) in. Why would you want oval speakers anyway?

no no no... there are cut outs for 6x9's where the 3rd brake light would go on the sedan.

OK,

but the question is still the same, why would you want oval pistons (speakers)? I'm ancient, but I have no need for 6 X 9s or Jensen Triaxials.

I've got the 6.5/5.25 combo also. Boston Z6 upfront and Boston Pros in the rear...the rears take more work then they are worth since you can't even hear them upfront. You'll need a spacer to get any decent speakers to fit upfront and there is a wide range of thought on mounting speakers in the rear door. Some say you need spacers some say you....I believe it really depends on which speakers you run. I know there are several people that dont run anything in the rear (it still sounds good).

I'm not much of a fan of 6X9s either.....they may offer better bass response but they usually don't reproduce vocals the way true components do.

I've got some pics of front/rear mounting if you'd like to see them.

If anyone is

debating about front speakers only or front and rear speakers, please let me know. If I fade to front only, it sounds good. But front and rear speakers is a no-brainer to me. Please feel free to listen to my setup for comparison. I don't claim to have the best system, but it WRX4ME. Just my $0.02

For what it's worth,

I run the same size front and rear speakers. It is a pain to cut the rears, but that's what jig saws are for. I didn't need a spacer for the rear speakers. Not saying you can't have a nice sounding system without rears, I feel that the rears add a needed "fill".

How much you willing to spend ? Do you drive with your windows down a lot ? These are probably the most important things to think about before buying. Your car is pretty loud and if you drive with the windows down a lot, just a $150 pair of speakers ain't gonna cut it. Also, do you have a deck ?

i'm running 6-1/2" up front with a spacer and 4" in the rear straight drop in. i'm not sure about the newer 04 cars but the 02-03 needs a spacer unless you have have some pretty shallow mounting depth speakers. i think the maximum is 1-3/4" without a spacer i've heard 1-7/8" somewhere too. the biggest spacer you can put without problem is a 3/4" with some shaving of the door pannel i think. i heard 1" but that is a basically almost cutting through the door pannel grill.

$150 speakers can be loud enough to hear with your windows down. it depends on what type of sound quaility you want out of it. i've heard okay ones that go loud the only thing is they need to be powered with an amp to get that type of output.

I might be interested in hearing it I also believe in running rear speakers for fill but in small cars with rear speakers mounted low in the door it seems the benefits are reduced. I'm still debating if I should try to get more balance out of my system (think its a combo of not enough pwr in rear/rear spkr location) so i might want to see how it works for you.

btw I can fade 2/3 to the rear and still hear the fronts over them But hey....thats why I paid so much for them

Very true. Also what kind of sound quality are you looking for? What music do you listen to most?

You will be hard pressed to find a cheaper set of components/coaxials that will play loud and still sound smooth in the upper range.

I'd say you should listen to as many systems as possible, I'm happy with my car but I still wish I had heard more before (might have helped me in the rear). It really comes down to YOUR ear and pocket. I'd be glad to let you hear my car also. Believe me....its the best way. Everyone (including me) is usually biased towards what they're running....thats why they're running them.

Its hard to say which speakers are best. You can usually group them into classes of quality, output, and type of sound but you have to decide which type you like and what you can afford.

Completely agree with islandx.

It all depends on you. I have a large four channel amp for the fronts and rears and a large monoblock amp for the subs. My personal taste i music requires the amps. If you are planning on the stock head unit, look for very efficient speakers.

Yeah I probably will need to get more power to my rears or change them out for more efficient coaxs. I believe rock solid 100w monos running the fronts with deck power for Boston pros in the rear is to much of a disparity....which is my problem. I'll need to check out a few more systems to figure out what I should do...or if I should even try to do anything more

no more room = probably cant get more power for the rear

I'll probably just work on my sub....that thing is sliding around more and more everyday. I still havent figured out if I should strap it down or go with a sub floor.....and money is getting tighter....I really want coilovers soon!!

And I'll be jealous of your seat...is it in yet?

btw sorry for the hijack
