If it is anything like the 2002 wrx head units you need to first disconnect battery. then remove the AC/Heat control ***** they will just pull right off with some convincing. now use that same method of convincing to simply pull the radio/heat/ac control plastic trim right out. then you should have all the access you need to the 4 screws that hold the head unit in. hope this helps. a little note. make sure you take the **** that controls where the air in he car comes from off as well. it will also just pull straight out with some help from you. if you don't know how to go about getting the plastic trim off with out scratching or breaking it. try a small flathead screwdriver wrapped in a soft cloth. that should eliminate any scratching and give you the leverage you need until you can get a finger or two behind the trim to simply just pop it out all the way around the radio. good luck..

second note, i don't belive a stock 2004 head unit will run any amps unless it is a stock subaru setup, or has some little convertor thing that you need for the rca outputs.

Right, before going to the trouble to remove the HU, be aware that there are no preamp outputs on it. If you want to add an amp that takes line level only, you will need an LOC (line output converter) to convert the speaker level signal to line level. In the long run, for best sound performance you'll be better off replacing the HU with a good aftermarket one that has better sound quality as well as line-outs and more features.

Pull out the cup holder, unscrew the two screws, pull off the silver bezel, there will be 6 screws holding the brackets that hold the HU in.

BTW, you can just pull on the bezel without removing the cup holder, but if it's tight, you can start prying from that area (since you can't see it once you screw the cup holder back in)

if your amp has hi level inputs, you need to disconnect the speaker outputs from your stock stereo and hook them up to the input of your amp. basically the wires that go to your speakers will now go to your amp input. you will probably have to tap into the outputs from the back of your stereo and route speaker wire to your amp. if it is a 2 channel amp two outputs is all you need.
