Front speakers that will fit???
Front speakers that will fit???
I am having a difficult time figuring out what to do with the audio system in my car. I am looking to at a minimum replace the front and rear speakers with a good after market speaker. My issue is the front speakers, what is going to fit without modification of the stock grills or without a fabricated spacer?
I have tried searching, and I have read every thread here which looks like it would pertain to this without any luck. Please help, anyone with experience on which speakers fit in the front please post brand, type, model and size!! Thanks guys!!!

I have a Forester XT but I think space wise is similar.
If you don't want to do any modifications or spacers on the front door you will limit yourself to speakers that is less than 1.5" deep. (Thats the space between the mounting point and the window mechanism). Unfortunately most aftermarket speakers will be deeper than 1.5".
Give Crutchfield a call and see if they have anything. But based on what I heard from other forum discussions there is only one or two models.
I assume you want a good balance between spending time/money and better sound quality. Personally if you are installing proper speakers then you might as well spend the extra time to put in proper spacers.
There is a company called IA performance that sells plastic spacers for this application.
Alternatively if you even mildly mechanically inclinded you should be able to fabricate a spacer ring using a jigsaw and some MDF. It is very easy. I have done it and took some pictures, once I have some time I will post it.

Thanks for the reply, I have found IA performance and looked at their stuff. I think that is the route I am going with. I called crutchfield, nothing... They don't even sell the required brackets. I think I am going with either Polk or Infinity stuff.

Good luck with your search on the speakers.
I am wandering why you choose Polk and Infinity? I don't have any opinion on neither brands regarding car audio and I am interested to know other people's opinions on these brands.
May be you can tell me what kind of music you listen to and what you look for in speakers and what make you choose these two brands.

It's hard to find good components with a mounting depth of 1.5" for the front door, the infinity shallow mount speakers has 1 7/8" alredy.
The infinity REF comps are 2 1/16" deep, the KAPPA 6 1/2" comps are 2 3/16" & the KAPPA perfect are 3 3/4".
The Polk momos mm6 are 2 13/16", and the db6500 are 2 1/2".
You will need spacers for all of these sets.

thank you Jobs that is some great info...
herb, I couldn't tell you from an audiophile perspective. My wife had a set of infinities in her old maxima and they simply sounded good to me. My buddy at my unit just got 6.5" polk momos in his car and they sound very good as well. I mean I am totally open to whatever, but I have a gift card with crutchfield for $150 for one thing so I am looking at brand there and price is an issue...

Your welcome decoderdiesel, i think the Infinity Ref at crutchfield for $150 will be good for yah man.
Just i thought, if you could sell that gift card for cash, you could get some better speakers for the same price on the net.

I just installed the Infiniti Reference 6.5" components in my 04 WRX and they fit without any spacers(I did have to cut the ?basket? off the back of the factory spacers).
Just mount the metal ring that comes with the Infiniti's on the factory spacer and mount the woofers on that.
I had to be creative with the tweeters though, but I was able to use the stock brackets.
The Infiniti Reference 4002's (4.5" coaxial) that I used in th rear were more of a pain, the grill/door panel sits on the tweeter. Can be used but you would be better off with different/lower profile speakers for the rear.

Fun stuff, I had to use a stack of like 9 washers in the front so the windows wouldn't hit the 6 and a halfs, and drill new holes in the doors. then in the back I reamed out the small hole in the doors to fit 6 and a halfs, didn't need any spacers on that one because the window didn't hit. Other than that wiring an impreza is a sinch.

I just put MB Quart DSD 216's in my front doors of an 02 WRX. The install guy had to use a special circle to space them out further so they wouldnt hit the window. They have huge magnets on them. They were 6.5" and the tweeters also fit perfectly.
I also have an Alpine CVA-1005 popout lcd screen that fit in there sweet using a bracket from Subaru. I now have a cool compartment below that. (Before I had that huge honking factory CD and Tape deck unit).
