effects of blown (?) tweeters on components

I have been running an MTX Thunder 404 amp, currently only running the front sets of Infinity Reference 6.5" components (unbridged), and stock rear speakers with stock HU in my 04 wrx wagon for about a year now.

I knew when installing (but not when I ordered!) that the tweeters may blow as their RMS rating (40 I think) is less than that of the amp (50 x 4). The crossover had an option to connect the tweeter to a "-3 dB" terminal, which I did. I hoped that would reduce the risk of blowing it. Well, I don't think it worked out so well, as highs now sound a little scratchy.

First off, is there an easy way (ie other than, hmm that song sounds bad) to determine the extent of damage to a speaker? I don't really have access to an oscilloscope, but I have a multimeter and a decent understanding of electrical properties.

And second, would a blown tweeter affect the way the mid-level speaker is driven? Does the bad tweeter somehow change the load, thus changing the amount of power sent to the mids by the crossover? The thing is that the mids now sound a little muddy, and I'm trying to determine how to go about troubleshooting the problem, whether to start by replacing the tweeters, crossovers (external, came with the speakers as a set), or maybe hook up the mids alone and see what I get?

I'd appreciate any help, thanks.
