PS3 media server (Tversity, Nero Home, WMP, PS3 Media server)
yeah i use to be on easynews too for maybe 3-4 years.. but after bittorrent became common it didn't make sense to pay for newsgroup, because you almost have to be on everyday to check for release.
But i think easynews was pretty good because it retains almost 30 days worth of post.

i know franco is running his media server through his laptop, is everyone else running off their laptops? What i have been thinking is conducting a test with all the laptops running the media server and we can compare what is working and what isn't.

my laptop barely ran a 1080p quality movie at medium settings. also depends on your network.

My favorite so far is tversity.
Tversity (http://tversity.com/)

I tried ps3 media server 1.00 - (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/)

Out of the box, no codec or additional encoder required.

first time setting up media server for xbox360 and ps3, still in testing phase...
Orb (http://orb.com/)
Pro
Can stream pr0n from anywhere with ps3, xbox 360, wii, computer, mobile phone
Con
Have to navigate through web browser
Right now it goes through the internet so upload speed might be an issue, I have 1g up so no problem there. (though I think there's a way to set it locally still testing.)
will update more later.

I tested my laptop vs my desktop on the java ps3 media server.
if the video requires transcoding then my laptop will lag such as MKV.
if you don't such as AVI then it doesn't lag at all
laptop specs:
intel p-4m 750 1.8ghz
512mb Ram
ATi Radeon x600
desktop specs:
intel core duo 2 E6600 2.0ghz
2gb ram
ATi Radeon x1950xt
Both computers are wired through the router and the ps3
Conclusion: transcoding requires alot of CPU power, and maybe Ram.

512 mb ram is not enough to process transcoding.
I have 2 GB is ram on my laptop and it works fine. No lag, can't even tell the program is running.
Have you try playing *.rmvb files thru the java program?
I couldn't get my to work.

to find out which program is best for you ask your self the following questions:
1) What kinda video format will you be playing?
2) Do you care if you can or can't play rm, rmvb or ISO formats?
3) Do you want subtitles?
If you want subtitles then use Java PS3 MS
If you want to play RM, or RMVB use TVersity
If you want to play ISO dvd formats use Java PS3 MS
the great thing about Java PS3 MS is its the easiest method to use ur ps3 to watch videos from your PC without any additional installs. so its ready to go when u run the java ps3 ms
the biggest problem between Java PS3 MS vs Tversity, TVersity is setup for everything else such as ps3, xbox360, psp etc.... Java PS3 MS is only for PS3

maybe not enough ram but, i'm sure your cpu is faster than what i have on my laptop
I did notice one thing. Some of the xvid that doesn't play with tversity. Won't play with media server either.
I think it's due to the way the video was encoded. Either the size or frame rate messed with streaming and decoding to ps3.
So comparing the type of files it will play
tversity
avi (xvid & divx)
rmvb
mpeg
media server
avi (xvid & divx)
iso
mpeg
So i guess only difference is one plays iso other plays rmvb.
I have both installed thou and i just interchange usage for the files I need to play.
