I have never accidentally slid the back end, i HAVE accidentally gone way too far out when intentionally sliding but my vote is bad tires & too much speed plus all the weight in the rear and im guessing you're used to FWD

i would guess it's a case of "AWD = invincible", therefore it must be a mechanical problem.

Im also gonna guess you hit the middle peddle instead of the right one when it stepped out?

I would say a combination of snapping the throttle + non-smooth motions + brake pedal = Post #1

Just to be clear, what should your reaction be when the rear-end of the car gets loose? And how should you react with under steer?

In my experience, you're better off getting off the gas in either instance. In case of understeer, if you've gone in way too deep, straighten out the wheels and slam the brakes, so you at least hit whatever's in front of you with the full crumple zones of the car, instead of risking a door side impact with a tree. With oversteer, turn into the slide and hope for the best, if you get lucky it'll come back under you. DO NOT grab the brakes while the back end is stepped out, you'll whip around the rest of the way and we'll be back at post #1.

I'm not a pro driver, this is just what I have done to keep myself in one piece before.

Panic, hit the breaks and scream like you are Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone.

Is the e-brake recommended as well?

Heh,

anyway, shawnpdillon's is pretty good. In both cases, don't brake or lift hard.

understeer, you want to slowly lift and slowly unwind the steering wheel until you regain traction.

oversteer, you want to counter steer (turn-into the slide) and slowly lift until you regain traction.

Unfortunately, in both situations its very common to not have enough room to perform these maneuvers so the best solution is to slow down and drive within the limits of your car.
