See, it's not all bad, since it's the lightest RWD Chevy platform ever made, but all of your friends are going to laugh at you for driving around in it
As easy as it is to rile up a Mac user I would recommend NEVER engaging an Amiga fantatic in a discussion about computers. I think of computers in the same way I think of cars these days, I really like using them but I don't have an ounce of loyalty to any of them.

And I would prefer to think of the Amiga going out in its heyday as a 1993 Z28... :-)

Isn't there a lot of NextStep/Amiga code in OS X?

Mac users are the easiest to rile up, because we've been getting hated on by idiots for years, whose only argument is that 'Macs don't have gamez!!' It's just getting really old, and I jump at the chance to make someone feel stupid, too

From what I understand there is a lot of *nix under OS X but I can't be sure as I don't really follow the Mac world. I am almost certain there is nothing from the Amiga in OS X.

I am going on fuzzy memory here, but from what I recall the NextStep was a Steve Jobs thingie from the early 90's that was pretty much Unix based so some of that could have made the jump to the OS X team. The Amiga developed mostly on its own using a similar command line language to Unix (at least compared to DOS) but not really the same. In the early 90's a lot Unix shell commands were ported over to the Amiga.

I think the main developers from the Amiga world went on to make REBOL and part of BEoS.

you are right, computers suck... Haha... Why do I know all of this useless crap?

An anonymous reader writes "Always the innovator, Apple is rumored to be developing a two-button mouse! Personally, I don't think it will catch on. Two buttons will be way too confusing for your average user."

That is the one thing that I dislike about Apple. They just have to be different, and stay with the one button mouse. Apple has come to rely more and more on contextual menus, and the first thing I do when I set up a new Mac, is plug in my Kensington Pilot Mouse.

Bleh.

many moons ago I took a model making class (prototype and architectual). We had a guest speaker come in and he had a foam prototype of a two button mac mouse. I was shocked then. That was 13 years ago.

Well, the Kernel of OS X is based on their own port of BSD. The NextStep connection is actually pretty strong. NextStep started out as a seperate project when Jobs was kicked out of Apple. When he came back, they ended up using a lot of the same archeticture and paradigms from NextStep. So, there is definitely a lot of NextStep code in OS X, as OS X is kind of a cross between traditional Mac OS and NextStep (actually, a vastly rewritten port called Rhaposdy).

Now, where I'm fuzzy is the NextStep/Amiga connection, I thought NextStep was the Amiga GUI, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm starting to *assume* that Amiga is an OS, much like Unix and that the Windowing System is kept seperate and can be anything you want (like NextStep or BeOS or whatever). Like I said, I really don't know **** about Amiga, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, two button support is built into OS X, but the UI guidelines set forth by Apple force developers to make their programs usable with only one mouse button. For the most part, they've been successful, but its always been stupid IMO. I guess it is about time they caught up to the 90's

Although, I am still suprised at the number of Windows users that never use the right button.

Don't forget the users that double click everything. Icon or not.

If you're left handed, the right button would be your friend.

I really don't think ther is any NextStep/Amiga connection whatsoever, I could be wrong but I am almost certain there is none. At the time the Next came out and got its own magazine I was at the heart of my Amiga using loyalty and would have noticed if Amiga people were jumping ship or if the technology was being used elsewhere. The Amiga was always color and early incarnations of the Next were black and white postscript screen output in more of an Xwindows layout. Anyway, I really wanted a Next back in the day, the lure of the 68040 processor and the all black computer was very strong.
