Meh. Painting one's wheels doesn't lead to them falling off or anything. Powdercoating is often completely unnecessary for people who either want to simply change the color of a set of wheels or hide visual blemishes. The average person can't tell the difference between paint and powdercoating if they were painted correctly. And I can tell you which version I'd rather have scratched to hell by tire installers...

yes very true, but a rattle can paint job with 600grit...is NOT the correct way of doing this.

sanding them down with a 320 or so(down to bare metal...zero finish left on them) then a nice primer that will withstand the heat from the brakes and brake dust. Then a nice paint job, either single stage or 2stage(basecoat clearcoat) then a nice sealer.
followed by washing your wheels more often than the average person washes their car. Hell, I clean my show rims and wax them more than the average person waxes their car! I clean my frame more than the average person washes wheels.
the point with that is, if you want a quality job thats not powdercoat, then you are going to have to maintain it. Otherwise, you powdercoat them and forget about it.
And even if you want to paint your rims via rattle can, if you take the tires off first, you'll be able to continue the paint job into the inside of the rim, which then allows you to not have the paint chip on the edge of the rim from weather and what-have-you.

If you are worried about rims/paint getting trashed. there are a few tire shops around that will take their time (IMHO)

Powdercoating your wheels is like putting a 6MT in a bugeye. It's cheaper and easier to just sell what you got, and get what you want up front.

my rotas had already been sanded and painted over several times, i just wanted to get the surface smoothened out, the 600 worked fine( a 400 would probably saved me sum time and elbow grease tho ), with that said, i wasnt looking for a spotless show look(cmon i painted em flat black), but they did come out cleaner and alot better than i expected the way i did it.. to each his own i guess.. o BTW black on black FTW!

until you look back and realize that if you kept that bugeye and done the 6MT swap, you would still have a Subaru
