Lieber's camp arrival wheely amazing
CLEARWATER, Fla. - A king, a sheik and a Shaq:
That's who else owns a truck like Jon Lieber's new baby.
Lieber rumbled into spring training yesterday in his 2-week-old Ford F650 SuperTruck, a customized blue-and-black beast, 9 feet, 2 inches tall and 25,000 pounds, with six doors, 45-inch wheels, seating for seven, a satellite dish and customized leather interior. It cost him $211,000, more than twice the $94,000 base price.
But when you throw in, say, $22,000 for the two extra doors - actually, an extra half of a cab - it adds up fast.
It was an audacious entrance for a player who doesn't really have a spot on the ballclub.
Lieber entered the last two spring trainings as the Phillies' No. 1 starter. After logging the worst of his 12 seasons, he is trade bait and rotation insurance, the sixth starter on a revamped staff constructed without him in mind.
Assuming the Phillies don't need him as an injury replacement, Lieber, 37 in April, could be traded for bullpen help by the end of spring training. So for a few weeks, he will be Mr. Extraneous with a really big truck.
Maybe the new wheels will keep his mind occupied. He pitched poorly last season when the Phillies shopped him near the trading deadlines.
