Good luck. I'll keep my eye out for you best I can. I'll send off some e-mails to friends/family in Sac.

Unfortunately, IT is the only thing I could do that would pay the bills.

I would love to do what Deede does, or be a personal chef, but I don't have any qualifications other than, I like it. I went to school for industrial design, but never finished that I could probably scrounge up a shatty portfolio if my life depended on it. I graduated in Business/MIS.

Hey, man, I just asked if we have any windows spots open here but we don't. One of the admins knows a headhunter in EG so I'm getting their info. PM me your email and I'll send it your way.

I will try my best to keep an eye out for ya man... We had a spot for a "project manager" that was more of a technical project manager (AD conversion from NT) and I posted it here a few months ago but I don't think anyone applied for it, required a degree or I would have applied.

If you can find a government job, even if it is for help desk like I am doing now, it is a pretty good deal for a father such as yourself. Lots of time off, usually pretty casual about being a few minutes late now and then. Like I said, I will keep my ear to the ground. I have a friend who is leaving his spot with an IT consultant soon and if they are looking for someone to fill it, I will give up the info. The other IT consultanting group he is moving to is also going to be hiring more people but with more of an emphasis on VB programming and small custom databases and less on the network / Active Directory stuff.

Like the others have said, don't be afraid to look at different things. You know, this Windows Admin stuff isn't paying that much anymore, even if you do find another job doing it. I honestly know waiters and bar tenders that make the same as I do, but of course their hours aren't super family friendly.

ok I will stfu now! I should get back to work! haha

Negative.
CA is not a "Right to Work" state, meaning you have no right to be employeed.
That being said, each person's employment contract is different, but many have a clause that states words to the effect "At Will Employee".

My boss can walk up to me and say, "Paul, thanks, but your services are no longer needed" and can me.
However, if she says,"Paul, your work is suffering, your projects are late and/or over-budget, you spend too much time posting on i-club....", she has now given a reason for my termination and had better have plenty of evidence to support her claim.
If she doesn't, I'd have a very good case for wrongful termination.

Please don't take my word for it; go ask your own HR dept. under the guise of your asking for a friend.

But back to ryball's issue: I'd ask for two month's compensation, basing on all the time/effort you've put in for the company, being a team player, sacrificing weekends, etc.

We've got an opening for someone who knows VB really well and has experience with writing EDI exports and imports for medical insurance eligibility processing.
