while an assumption was made on my part, half of the cars, whether they were examined/inspected by Ed or not, COULD have a bad tune. read b/t the lines. we all know Ed is being diplomatic.
Guys, no need to fight here. I think we're all trying to say and accomplish the same thing: get your cars running safely and smoothly. Lets not nitpick over punctuation and phrasing .

Thanks

Good discussion. Ed & Paul, please keep us all posted.

I would be curious to see if you can find a pattern (i.e. STi's with certain components, etc.). It's good knowledge for the entire Subaru community.

Was he using Ecutek and if so, did he turn the car off and back on between pulls? If he didn't, then there was no actual custom tuning going on since Ecutek requires a complete reflash to make any adjustments aside from the blanket adjustments that can be made via DeltaDash. If he was using ProTuner, then this doesn't really matter. Although I would wager to say that getting a tune propperly dialed in within 3 pulls is very unlikely in either case.

Thanks

What can cause a tune to go bad? I know the answer may just be it was tuned poorly to begin with. Prior to owning my STI I did have a tune go bad over time on my old '03 wrx. It was tuned by a bay area tuner and ran great for around 6 months. All of a sudden my WGDC went haywire. The car at WOT would fluctuate at a rythm between 10 psi and 17 psi. It was eventually fixed (acutally by Nate) and ran great until I traded it in for the STI when it was returned to stock.

My car continues to run extremely well, granted I haven't done any data logging, but I do not hear any knock, I have consistantly normal egt's and practically no oil consumption.

This is all very unfortunate for those having problems, no doubt. I just hope their is no issue with ECUTEK where a tune for some reason or another can magically change from the original tune. I know the information is burned on the ECU, so in theory it should not change, but heck it's a computer. I certainly have information burned on my computer that doesn't function properly anymore. Maybe as owner's of tuned cars, we should expect to do a check on our tune every four months or so. I know we do maintenance on our office computers much more often than that. Ed and Paul what do you think: is it OK to tune your car and forget about it? or should we expect that some parameters can change over time? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have experienced this first hand on my old car.

Nick,

A tune cannot magically "go bad." Either the tune is done poorly to begin with, or in your case it sounds like the tuner didn't have proper adjustments in place for varying conditions causing the tune to fall apart when the weather/altitude changed drastically. The only other possibility of course is that the customer changes significant parts on the car after the tune. None of the S^2 cars I've seen have exhibited strange boost behaviour. The dangerous ones simply run way too lean and cause extremely high EGT's and lots of knock.

You should absolutely not have to check a good tune every four months. There is no hard drive in the ECU to go bad. If your car starts and idles, the ECU's memory is in tact and if the tune is done propperly, there should be no issues. So again,
this has absolutely nothing to do with the actual Ecutek platform or tuning in general. Its the tuner's responsibility to get the tune working propperly under varying conditions.

As far as your car, it may very well be that yours is one of the safe ones. But just because you can't hear knock, doesn't mean it is. Most people have no idea what knock sounds like and on louder cars its almost impossible to pick it out. EGT's are a good thing to watch as long as the probe is placed propperly. I still recommend getting a couple logs with a wideband just to make sure.

Thanks

You're welcome, Ya he was turning it off and on, but I also would agree with it being "very unlikley" it was a properly done tune, especially since it made my motor go pop!

GT35_STI,

Did you rebuild your stock motor or just get a new built short block?

Neither, I'm still running the blown motor ATM, it just has massive blow by it still holds power right now...

I am however having a motor built right now, fully forged internals with some other goodies

As far EGT goes, what is normal/good reading in Celsius? And where is the best place for the probe? My car is not tuned yet, I'm just curious.

I don't see much more than 840C, even at the track (sometimes out there it will peak to close to 900C). My probe is right next to the O2 sensor where all four exhaust pipes come together just before the uppipe.

One time I was seeing upwards of 1000C. Turns out my fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose popped off due to high boost and the fuel pressure reverted to 43 psi static.

^^^^^^^^^^^ This is why you spend the money on EGT and fuel pressure gauges!!!!
