No swansong for Carlos Sainz [10/11/04 - 09:59]
Sainz calls it a day after heavy practice crash
Carlos Sainz will not take part in the final round of the World Rally Championship it was announced this morning. The Spaniard, who has already announced his retirement from the sport, crashed heavily in Tuesday reconnaissance run, suffering neck pain as a result. The double champion has been advised to sit out the Australian race.
“In a long and fast left corner, I picked the right line and slid the car into the tightening bend," Sainz explained. "A sudden change of grip launched our car towards the outside where we hit a big tree at around 80 or 90 km/h.”
Complaining of neck pain, Sainz left the hospital last night in a neck brace and returned to the team hotel in Perth. “The doctors strongly advised me not to drive considering another impact of the same kind could lead to serious consequences” explained the Madrid based driver. Co-driver Marc Marti was uninjured but experienced some muscular pain.
Overnight, Sainz took the decision not to take part in the second day's recce. Later this afternoon, he went through further medical checks that confirmed the original diagnosis.
Upon his landing in Perth at 18.30, Guy Fréquelin had a meeting with the Spaniard and agreed with Carlos Sainz that the safest option was to withdraw from the Telstra Rally Australia. Therefore, only one Xsara WRC will start tomorrow morning, driven by Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena.
After 194 starts and 26 victories, Catalonia would prove to Carlos Sainz's last WRC event.
