Where at? That seems a bit steep if there is no head work involved with that or other upgrades.
But that's about the figures you're looking at no matter what you do if you're doing a rebuild. My 2.0 quote was $7k ballpark but I need new heads most likely. Clutch. Etc.
I am trying to decide what to do right now. For not much more I can buy a wrecked STI and swap the whole damn thing over.

My transmission was built before I got there, used case but internals were brand new 09 wrx stuff...drove up from santa cruz in the morning and it was swapped by the afternoon...drove home and and he kept my old transmission
Think it was 4.2k for motor and 3.5k for trans

Maybe because they were rebuilds? Heads were reused which saved a bunch of money..basically new pistons, rods, crank, bearings, valves etc but block and heads were reused

Yeah I think my heads will need a complete overhaul if not replace. I'm sure that makes up for some of it... and a clutch. But it still surprises me that you got a tranny as well. I was figuring it'd be around $5000 for what I want. And maybe because I might need to do some block work? Maybe that did it. Who knows.
I know the quote was fair and I don't question it's validity. I'm sure that's what it would take (I've got mad miles). But it did catch me off guard a little.
More than likely I'm going to either find an STI long block swap or just find a wrecked STI. Hell I'd setting for a 2.5 liter WRX LOL.
Time to start the search. Haaaa.
